critical period of weed / sugar beet competition

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) crop suffer strongly from weed interference. As estimation of the critical period of weed control is very important for planning weed control strategies. The maximum root yield (ton/fed.) losses due to sugar beet-weed interference in the whole season were 84 – 87% from weed free plot under high weed infestation about 9 - 10 ton / fed.. The relationship between sugar beet root yield (ton/fed) and weed free, weed interference periods were linear, quadratic and logistic functions. The relationship between dry weight of total weed g/m2 at end growing season and period of weed free was significant negative and prediction equation with R-sq value 84.9%, but, the relationship between it this traits were positive and prediction equation with R-sq value 18.3% without any significantly between all weed interference treatments. The critical period of sugar beet/weeds interference between 2 to 12 weeks and weed control strategies should be used to prevent weed interference in this period to maintain maximum sugar beet yields. The early and late income period threshold was estimated by 4- 10 weeks after emergence as the time interval when the gross income of sugar beet yields are higher than the total cost include cost of weed control treatments.

Weed Research Central Laboratory (WRCL ) was founded according to the ministerial decree No. 224 in 2002 to increase the role of weed science disciplines in improving agricultural production. The activities of laboratory is in carrying out basic and applicable research which relevant with weed control research adaptive and applied by cultural, chemical, biological and mechanical methods as well as evaluation and or testing herbicides and preparing technical recommendations for field, horticulture and vegetable crops and weeds along road sides and ditch banks of sub canals and drains. The administrative structure of the WRCL consist of three departments: Weed control in field crops department. Weed control in horticulture, vegetables crops and roadsides and ditch banks and drains department. Weed survey, ecology and physiology department. There is regional laboratories in experimental stations at Sakha, Gemmeza, ElKassasin, Ismailia, ElKanater, ElSerw, ElNubariah, Sids, Mallawi and Shandaweel. WRCL stresses on the importance of extension and training activities in weed control discipline and focusing with various research centers and research activities in WRCL for integrated weed control. The WRCL work and cooperate with universities for conducting research dealing with the evaluation of herbicides in field, horticulture, vegetable crops and road sides.
