Sound Engineering primarily for bands and acts in nightclub environs
MSH Projects Limited
March 2012 - March 2012
MSH Projects Limited and its sister company MSH Investments Limited are my new projects.
After taking MS3 Communications and its parent company as far as I could take them I have decided to take on a new challenge.
So I have some small consultancy work lined up along with some freelancing, but I'd quite like to wear a "few less hats" and work for someone for a while, see where we end up...
I'm making some lifestyle changes, spending more time with my wife, our family and now grand(!)kids.
Network Operations Director
MS3 Communications Limited
January 2011 - March 2012
MS3 Communications is the company founded by Tony Hales and Mike Harlington that will own and control access to the fibre network in Hull.
Initially a network covering most of the commercial area in the city extending to cover the majority of the city bringing change to the telecommunications geography of the area.
A truly independent network, based on fibre to fibre connectivity to homes and businesses in the area used by a network of resellers both large and small using the power of our partners to grow the network based on solid and commercially viable footing.
Offering the choice for the residents and businesses of Hull to connect into and around the city, and allowing other carriers to offer telecommunications and data services in the previously "closed" city of Hull.
I designed much of the route, worked with the telcos MS3 is partnered with to ensure compliance and was involved with all the security procedures and routines a business like this has to comply with. I also dealt with finance and planning initially whilst my partner dealt with councils and government issues.
I gained invaluable knowledge of ISO 27001 and 9001, I got involved once more with control systems, routing, I think in all my years in business I was never so involved with something so disruptive to a regional area.
I'm very happy with MS3 and its parent company, but it was time to go so go I did...
Technical Sales Director
January 2010 - January 2011
MediaSat3 Limited was a forward thinking company specifically set up to develop innovative telecommunications infrastructure and cross platform/media channels.
We partnered with the companies who are the ‘best of breed’ in various specialist areas across the telecommunications and technology spectrum, allowing us to deliver not only the infrastructure, but also the entire delivery network directly to you or your clientele and the services that sit on that infrastructure.
As a truly independent telecommunications company regulated by Ofcom,
we are able to offer our customers a ‘joined up’ service that covers everything from their basic telecoms needs right through to high speed satellite broadband, wireless mesh networks and innovative creative applications on mobiles.
this became...the above!
January 2003 - January 2009
Acoustic consultancy and acoustic design of recording and entertainment spaces, as well as advising and problem solving in education and other difficult acoustic environments.
After my experiences with Ibiza and touring I started out doing installation work but was unfortunately stopped from doing much of the physical work I enjoyed by ill health. Moving more into consultancy, working almost exclusively with schools, colleges and recording studios.
Examples of what we did...
Cabinco build log cabins for home and business use, having previously worked alongside the RSPB, their 'eco-credentials' attracted a high profile educational client.
Cabinco approached us to solve issues they had with regard the E4/BB93 building regulations for the acoustic design of schools. The regulations are guidelines for acoustic performance, externally and internally.
We looked at several buildings they had built, and identified the problems these buildings have specifically with regard to BB93.
Acoustic Design then designed two products and put Cabinco in touch with the manufacturers to help combat flanking and isolation, the two main problems with a multi occupancy building of this size. In addition Acoustic Design also specified slight changes to the general construction methods that will ensure Cabinco exceed all the current regulations for now and in years to come
I continued to take work programming lighting and control systems and eventually came in as a lead consultant with Philips on the AMbX project where I worked with the design and implementation team ahead of the launch of the product.
C2K Music Group
September 2003 - October 2005
After 5 years in Ibiza working with most of the clubs, I came back after an almost fatal accident and set up a record label and publishing company.
June 1999 - June 2003
I went to Ibiza after getting involved in the club scene, building on my experiences in the UK I quickly became a part of the "scene" and had a hand in almost all the major clubs, as either operator and programmer for the lighting or system tech for the sound. In many cases doing both jobs.
I also supported Bofill Associados the Avolites distributor in Spain by dealing with their English clientele.
I continued to tour out of season and was lucky enough to work with many chart acts.
I took programming of DMX to a whole new level and regularly got involved with light shows. I also found that although my hearing isn't by any means perfect, I could EQ sound systems in difficult environments, meaning that I added another bow to my string.
Just 2 examples of what I did here...
Eden is probably one of the best known clubs in the world. With a capacity of over 5000 and a DJ booth designed by Judge Jules. We were resident crew and advisors for several years to Eden.
Often incorrectly referred to as "Manumission", Privilege is the largest nightclub in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. We were resident there for several years working with the management and existing lighting crew to help make the magic happen seven nights a week for 14 weeks of the season
Sadly an accident almost sealed my fate, and after a recovery period came back to the UK to start again.
June 1998 - June 1999
I freelanced with Arena as a general stagehand. In this position I rediscovered my love of music and live entertainment and found I had a natural knack for lighting design and control systems.
I went on to freelance for myself touring and developing my skillset.
I got involved with Pulsar and Clay Paky, I operated and programmed for a number of venues around the country on their behalf and I also took part in UKLJ and WLJ reaching the finals for 3 years. Officially ranking me number 3 in the world as a light jock.
The Internet Business Directories Ltd
May 1996 - October 1998
The Internet Business Directories was one of the first directories to appear on the Internet, giving small businesses a way of advertising their services online for the first time.
Using a (then) unique postcard sized advert, I established a national presence with a sales force of almost 100 people.
I received an offer from a national company and promptly sold out, after various migrations it became Scoot and then Yell.com
Professional Security Consultants
January 1991 - January 1994
My first "proper" business venture, installing CCTV and intruder alarms. Involved with Bellway Homes and Chartdale Homes as a major contractor employing several people. From this I went on to provide close protection and consultancy for the Home Office developing wireless security in the prisons sector and also helped in the development of Digital Video Storage and Transmission systems.
