Vinall - Illustrator - London, England, UK

Michelle Vinall

London, England, UK

I am a BA Animation graduate from Ravensbourne College of Art and Design in Greenwich, London.

I have spent the last 3 years working in the games industry in London, England, and am currently producing Art and Illustration freelance.

I am interested in taking short-term commission work or a job where I can work full time as an illustrator/designer, preferably within the Greater London area.

In my free time I create children’s picture books and visual novel games for PC and Mac.

I am an experience illustrator with a varied backlog of illustration examples to showcase my work which you can find on my portfolio website.

I have released a children's book online here;

And also have a manga published in the Leek and Sushi ‘Manga Cupcakes’ Anthology which is available for purchase here;

Work History

Junior Artist

September 2013 - September 2014

Most of the projects I worked on with Mediatonic are unreleased so I am unable to share the names and details of the games I worked on at present.

In my role as Junior Artist, I provided 2D illustrations and vectors for various PC and mobile-device games. The majority of these were final, polished images featured in-game, though sometimes I would help concept characters or ideas alongside the leads.
Occasionally I would be called on for animation, and used Adobe Flash to create short animations of characters and effects that were again used in-game.

Functionality Tester

Sega Europe Limited

September 2012 - June 2013

Whilst at SEGA, I gained extensive knowledge of Functionality Testing.

My task was to follow regimented Test Plans and ensure all aspects of the game were working correctly. When encountering errors, I would submit detailed bug reports containing steps to reproduce the in-game error, investigate how often the error occurred and whether it was limited to a specific piece of hardware.
Once the bug report was sent off and a new build created with a possible fix, it would then be my job to regress the error and check the game was functioning correctly again.

Illustrator and Animator

November 2011 - March 2012

When I was an employee, Gamar was a small startup company based in London, creating videogames for mobile devices.

As 50% of the design team, I was responsible for storyboarding initial ideas, preparing the Power Point presentations for upcoming pitches, using Photoshop to create the in-game backgrounds and working with Adobe After Effects to animate the finished characters illustrated by my co-worker.

Occasionally I would contribute game ideas for the characters, story and gameplay. I was also on the team for the original pitch of the British Museum game 'A Gift for Athena' and did months of research into the Museum and the gameplay and story design for various exhibits.

Concept Artist

JD Wasabi Studios

June 2011 - November 2011

JD Wasabi Studios is a small independent gaming company which creates visual novel computer games. I worked on the demo for our first game 'Hungry Whispers', which was released in August 2011 but work is ongoing for the full version.

My job in this company was character designer, concept artist and background designer/artist.
I experimented with the method of illustrating over a 3D render another team member had created, to draw the backgrounds. In this case, backgrounds for a train. I also had a key part in developing the initial story and characters.

256 Postcards Ago

My second children's book, 256 Postcards Ago is a rhyming picture book following one of the adventures a young boy and his imaginary friends share by the sea.

Hurricane Lane

‘Hurricane Lane’ is a rhyming picture book I created about a young girl who has a homework assignment to find the ‘seven wonders of the world’ in her own life. Set within a cosy suburban neighborhood, it frequently delves into the mind of its main character to show you that you don't need to leave home to find the wonders in your own life.

It is available to purchase a paperback from amazon but I recently teamed up with Canadian company Storypanda to release it as an interactive book on the ipad.

Animation/VFX Showreel

My Animation and Visual FX showreel as of April 2012.
