Michael Thornley

Stoke-on-Trent, England, UK

Designer / Project Coordinator

I provide assistance and support to adults with offending backgrounds to direct and create opportunities that will help them to take control of their lives and make a fresh start and to inspire.

Work History

Ex-offender Project Coordinator

Stoke on Trent College

From January 2013

For the past 7 years I have supported and coordinated adult offender based projects and worked with a number of companies and organisations to create opportunities for individuals who are trying to turn their lives around and gain valued skills and experiences. Most of these have taken place around the North Staffordshire area.
Significant projects have included art based community projects and also performing arts programmes. Although the key area of engagement is work based, such as construction and industry skills the focus now is upskilling and empowering individuals who feel they can make a difference and training them to help others like them to make a difference in their local communities. there are various schemes coming up in 2013 including Peer Mentoring which we will be focussing on and also continuing to work with the Probation Service and the West Midlands based Prisons for both male and female offenders.

Peer Mentoring Training 2013

This year we are designing a course that will train ex-offenders and other disadvantaged adults to become Peer Mentors and work with local support services and organisations and Prison Services.

Britain in Bloom 2011- 2012

Through this project I supported a local artist who is an ex-offender and wants to promote himself and his work using his own life experiences to convey the barriers and views of ex-offenders and the way they are seen by local communities.

Re-Act Drama based programme "I am Joe" 2012

this was a project designed for ex-offenders that developed their acting skills to produce a play that reflects their own life experiences battling addictions and stereotypes.

Ashfield Court (Vulnerable Adults) 2012-2013

designs in the Stairway with the residents and also supporting artists who are ex-offenders.
