Served as crop pathologist for teams of: Cereals(Maize, Sorghum,Teff); Oil seeds(Groundnut, Sesame) Fiber crop like Kenaf and Vegetable and tubers( Potato, Pepper, Alliums, Enset) in the Institute of Agricultural research for almost 25 years. After leaving IAR, I served at Ethio AgriCEFT as head of Crop Protection for 8 farms that grow Coffee, tea, Cereals, Oil seeds and vegetables along flowers. I was involved in tackling all pest problems of the various farms and design experiments to alleviate the problems. I also led the Certification programs on Coffee and tea on Rain forest alliance and UTZ certifications. Recently I am working at Hearts Plc. as Technical Manager. In short, I do have in depth knowledge on bacteriology, Mycology, Nematology and Virology. Therefore, I am well equipped in tackling pest problems of crops of various nature.

I was a senior researcher at the institute of AGRICULTURAL Research. After separating from IAR, I worked for Ethio-Agriceft as Crop Protection head managing 8 farms that specialize in Cereals, Flori-culture and Stimulants(Coffee and Tea).

Work History

Head Crop Protection & Certification Programs


• Tackled the crop protection problems of crops in 8 farms
• Gave various trainings for farm staff
• Gave trainings on UTZ, RFA & Café Practice standards for Agri-staffs on Coffee and Tea
• Select and identify appropriate pesticides for Rose farm at Holetta and recommended the appropriate pesticide spray interval and rates per hectare basis
• Served on various technical committees in the organization.
• Represented the Rose farm as delegate by the PLC. Under the Ethiopian Horticultural Producers and exporters association
• Developed and executed coffee wilt experiment at infested field at Gemadro (Major Finding: Disproved that it will not be possible to replant healthy coffee seedlings in place of rogued wilted plant)
• Made Gemadro FARM capable of attaining the certificates of RFA, UTZ and Café Practice
• Developed and executed tea wilt experiment at Wush Wush farm
• Developed Crop Protection Manual for Cereal Crops, Coffee and Tea & Rose Plantation
• Developed ICSM ( Internal Control System Manual) for Coffee & Tea

• Undertook research in plant pathology

• Engaged in various national task forces carrying out crop protection undertakings
• Participated on Year of Potato International Conference at Cusco, Peru and Presented the Certificate of Recognition to the Director of CIP in recognition of overcoming poverty in Ethiopia through the potato Team of Holetta
• Worked for Pesticide Release Committee in Screening new potato late blight fungicides
• Played a Major role in alleviating poverty in Oromia region (Holetta, Galessa, Degem, AliDoro and Holetta Zuria) through introduction of Elite Potato varieties & got recognition award from the Federal Democratic Republic Government of Ethiopia

From June 2005

• Evaluated elite potato varieties under different stages for their resistance against late blight disease
• Checked and evaluated selected potato varieties for their health status against bacterial wilt and viral diseases through ELISA technique
• Served as President for Eastern Africa Potato late blight Working group
• Trained farmers and development workers in capacity building on potato diseases

• Served as Co-advisor for a graduate student from AAU at Faculty of Science on Potato Late Blight Investigations at Holetta GH, Biology Department
• Served as Co-advisor for a graduate student from AAU at Faculty of Science on Spider mite control using biological control factors as essential oils at Holetta Agri-Flower farm


Plant Pathology Services

• Coordinated mycology, virology, nematology and bacteriology activities
• Undertook research on Ensete leaf virus disease
• Served as Head of Training Committee at PPRC
• Served as Editorial Committee for the Ambo Center


Crop Protection Division

• Counter plant pathologist for expatriate pathologist on Ensete PADEP III project
• Developed inoculation techniques for screening ensete clones for their resistance against bacterial wilt disease
• Arranged a training program for staff working in the program at the Netherlamds
• Developed and won project proposal from the world bank on ensete improvement program
• Availed budget for ensete clone collection from the major growing areas of the crop and made it successful
• Supported the other crop research activities on disease identification
• Gave trainings for subject matter specialists at MOA of Awassa
• Undertook several research activities on plant pathology aspect on ensete crop
• Identified the ensete leaf viral disease at Wageningen Agricultural University as leaf streak disease

• Coordinated various research activities in crop protection(Pathologu, Entomology & Weed Science)
• Served as main crop pathologist for crop teams of *(Maize, Sorghum, Lowland Oil Crops, Kenaf, Teff) and cooperated on vegetable disease projects from other centers
• Developed and Undertook several plant pathology research activities on the above crops
