Work History

Art Psychotherapist

Sussex Arts Therapy

From April 2012

I currently work part time in Sussex community providing art therapy, relaxation therapy and fatigue management. I provide art psychotherapy in the homes of clients. Several of my clients are residents with southdown housing association who have complex learning difficulties and are autistic. With my clients I combine art therapy and intensive interaction. I promote creativity and play to encourage social engagement in a therapeutic relationship. I support clients in making choices and in developing a sense of self in relation to others.

I am responsible for arranging sessions, communicating with managers and support workers to educate them in the role of art therapy. I provide therapy documentation, risk assessments and discharge reports, and arrange professional supervision for the therapy I provide. I receive clinical supervision on a regular basis to maintain a high level of therapeutic care, and professional development. I communicate with members of the client’s friends and family when appropriate.

Meeting and liaison with all parties through the process of art therapy and before discharge. Acting as co-therapist in an art therapy group during a colleague's absence. Attendance of team meetings and training days. Presentation of a case study at the end of the placement.

Specalist Occupational Therapist Technical Instructor

Wolfson Neurological Rehabilitation Centre

January 2004 - January 2004

I work in a multidisciplinary team providing specialist therapy in the occupational therapy department. I work with patients suffering from stroke, MS, brain injury and other neurological conditions and diseases. These patients often experience mental health problems as a result of their physical trauma, and suffer from a wide range of speech, language, communication and cognitive difficulties. I also work with individuals who have learning difficulties and a history of stroke or neurological conditions.

I manage individual referrals and run groups such as arts and crafts, relaxation, fatigue management and gardening. I have been central in developing therapy groups in the OT department and I continue to promote the role of these groups in our centre. I have developed a group referral form and documentation system for future audits and evidence-based practice. I carry a caseload of group referrals, and see patients on an individual basis. I attend goal-planning meeting, and assist in discharge reports.

I attend weekly review and case management meetings, providing input regarding patients’ progress in individual and group therapy. In these meetings I recommend therapies in the centre when appropriate for each patient, such as music therapy and neuropsychology. I give feedback to the team in deciding the best course of therapy for each patient’s needs.

I completed a pilot project for two years, as a co-therapist for the Wolfson Centre's weekly music therapy group, assisting a professional music therapist. I also was a facilitator for music and dance companies running activities with the patients at the Wolfson.
