Dr Achilonu’s doctoral research dealt with flavonoid modifications which resulted in development of novel methodologies to synthesize biologically active procyanidins and biflavonoids. Interestingly, the doctoral research work produced the following reminiscent outputs: the first oxidative formation of the inter-flavanyl bond in procyanidins which was published in a high impact factor journal (Organic Letters); a full USA patent (US 8, 501, 970 B2) and another USA Patent Application Publication, Pub. No.: US 2012/0289715 A1. During the research period, Dr Achilonu contributed to the synthesis of internal standards (radio-pharmaceuticals) that won the prestigious National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) award for innovation in 2008. His postdoctoral work at University of the Free State involved photolytically modifying HIV/AIDS drugs – to discover more of their bioactivities. He took part in developing methodology for the synthesis of array of therapeutic C-glycoside compounds (aspalathin and derivatives), which produced a patent registration and an article. He also successfully developed a scalable process for the synthesis of novel 4β→8-catechin flavan-3-one procyanidin derivative – a precursor to a rare natural bioactive free phenolic procyanidin B-3 (an antioxidant).
