Having lived in the countryside and been surrounded by nature for most of my life I have gained a passion to interpret what I see every day in my work. Inspired by natural forms, I take parts of them to create into different objects. I feel there are no limits to what I can create from natural forms, whether they are leaves, fossils or skeletons, using a variety of different media such as metal, clay and ice to develop my ideas. I use photography to capture these subjects and their colours in their natural surroundings and use these for inspiration.
I find Andy Goldsworthy’s work very interesting because he uses his natural world to create his work, decorating rocks with leaves and wrapping trees in ice, I think we have a lot in common. I find it interesting that the majority of his work only exists in photographs because they either blow away or disintegrate or melt. The rapid change in his creations reflects the seasons and cycles of nature. At present I am using him as inspiration for my current project, along with Ian Greensitt who casts bronze decorative sculptures of wild game such as birds, deer and fish. I admire the way he displays his sculpture on stands which I think makes them both more dramatic, and more suited to interior decoration in private houses.
Bex Simon is also a big inspiration on me and this has open up new ways of working for me
I come from a family of mechanically-minded people who have worked on the land and with agricultural machinery for generations. We always went on trips to traction engine rallies where there were demonstrations of old fashioned crafts such as blacksmithing, ceramics and glasswork. My father, who is a mechanic, has spent years trying to influence me to adopt practical mechanics but I always saw it in a more creative way.
I have jus finshed my course in acess to art in design in 3D & cermanics and in October 2012 I will be starting my degree in Artist Blacksmithing.
I am looking for any work which will help me developed new skills in the crafted world as I want to learn all I can about different skills.
