I am a professional harmonica player and teacher with 25 years' experience.
Brookburn Primary School
January 2008 - January 2010
January 2001 - December 2006
I planned and ran Adult education classes (harmonica, Irish traditional music, song writing) with Manchester Adult Education Service from 2001 - 2006. These classes included adults with a range of learning abilities.
I teach beginners and advanced harmonica classes weekly as part of Band On The Wall's community outreach programme and at The Met, Bury. In response to unexpectedly large numbers we have recently expanded provision.
I am the North West Regional Organiser for the National Harmonica League.
Folk Roots and Traditional Music Section Committee of the Union
January 1995 - July 2013
Since 1995 I have been a member of the Musicians' Union and from 2008 - 2010 I was on the Folk Roots and Traditional Music Section Committee of the Union.
I am a member of the PRS and MCPS.
Community-based workshop and project provision
Between 2004 - 2007 I organised and presented three festivals in Cumbria under the title 'Irish Music On The Move' providing concerts and workshops. I organised funding for this from the Arts Council.
In 1999 I initiated and developed an inner city community cohesion project 'In2Music' in which we developed songwriting, performance and recording skills and recorded material with 16-20 year olds at The Zion Centre, Hulme. The project ran every week until 2004.
As the North West Regional Organiser for the National Harmonica League, I organise, publicise and present Harmonica Days in Manchester.
2010 - 2012 I taught harmonica classes in three day centres for the elderly through the Valuing Older People department of Manchester City Council. This work has a focus on intergenerational health and wellbeing.
I regularly deliver music workshops at music festivals in the UK. For example, I run workshops in connection with the annual event 'The Big Whistle Festival' at Bury Met.
In order to manage these diverse elements I am well organised and used to completing any associated official paperwork and records. I have successfully applied for and received Art's Council funding. I run and maintain a website: www.matwalklate.co.uk which explains and publicises my various ventures
I enjoy working collaboratively and have the ability, through music to creatively motivate and inspire others. I was CRB checked for my primary school work but this was five years ago and therefore may need updating.
In addition to my main areas of musical expertise (Celtic, Blues & Jazz) I have also worked with Senegalese and Chilean musicians and I have an extensive knowledge of African, Indian and South American music.
