Work History

Electronic Design Consultant

Contract Electronic Design

February 2004 - January 2015

For the last ten years, I have worked continuously as a consultant (contractor) for many different electronics companies. I have successfully designed analog and digital circuits including, SMPS power supplies, communication, motor control, audio and video, RF, MEMS and much more. I also design printed circuit boards. Some of my PCB design work includes controlled dielectric differential coplanar waveguides for high speed USB and LVDS.

Chief Engineer

MID, Inc.

May 1985 - December 1990

I did 100% of the electronic hardware design including digital, analog, power supply, communication and audio circuits for our product “MegaMix” (sometimes referred to as the “MegaMix Automation System”). The Magazine “UP BEAT DAILY” (The official NAMM Publication) rated this product as one of the 10 “hottest” new products introduced at the Summer 1986 NAMM show.

As the chief engineer, I developed excellent communication skills with the customer.

Projects

MEGA-MIX AUTOMATION SYSTEM

In the mid 1980s, I formed a start up company called Musically Intelligent Devices, Inc. with a marketing man who brought a product concept, a software writer and myself. I did 100% of the electronic hardware design including digital, analog, power supply, communication and audio circuits for our product “MegaMix” (sometimes referred to as the “MegaMix Automation System”).

We introduces our product “MegaMix” at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) trade show at the McCormick center in Chicago in the summer of 1986. We developed this product with a total budget of less than $10,000. The Magazine “UP BEAT DAILY” (The official NAMM Publication) rated this product as one of the 10 “hottest” new products introduced at this show. See the associated file “Upbeat.PDF. Note, we were included in a list of companies, like Yamaha who have deeper pockets than most people can imagine.

UPDATE LEGACY PRODUCTS

Redesign several Bird Electronics legacy products to remove obsolescent parts, enable SMT assembly and RoHS compliance.

WATER SAVING DEVICE

Design circuit, Lay out PCB to read several sensors and control solenoid valve for water saving device, long battery life. Specify firmware and work closely with firmware writer.

STUDIO CONDENSER MICROPHONE

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for high performance low noise, low distortion, cost effective condenser microphone (very high input impedance amplifiers). Guitar Center stated best under $1,000 large diaphragm studio condenser microphone they had ever heard.

70KW WATERPROOF SOLID STATE RELAY

Design circuit, Breadboard and Test 70,000W unique solid state relay with various on board control features and interfaces for factory automation interface.

PORTABLE CHEMICAL TEST DEVICE

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for microprocessor control over various linear and rotary solenoids, light source and read linear optical CCD to automate many step chemical process. Write 20 page firmware specifications for quotes and completion. Assist mechanical engineer with R&D.

IMPLANTABLE TRIANGLE WAVE STIMULATOR

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for implantable microprocessor controlled triangle wave generator for animal research demonstrating nerve block technology

10 CHANNEL IMPLANTABLE NERVE STIMULATOR

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for 10 channel implantable nerve stimulator based on companies 2 channel design.

TINY 4,200W BLDC MOTOR DRIVER

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for tiny 4,200W BLDC sensorless motor driver that interfaced with customer’s requirement for high bandwidth optically isolated I2C control interface.

2,000W VFD THREE PHASE INVERTER

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for 2,000W VFD three phase inverter drive that operated over expanded temperature range and interfaced with customer’s control interface by way of low cost analog isolation amplifier.

2,000W OFF LINE SMPS PFC SWITCHR

Design circuit, Breadboard, Test and Lay Out PCB for 2,000W off line SMPS PFC switcher with less than 5% THD line current harmonics.

REVERSE ENGINEER OBSOLETE MAGNETIC SENSOR

Reverse engineer a magnetic sensor that Toyota uses to detect current in the rear window defroster. The original part and electronics in this automatic test system had become obsolete. Set Toyota up with replacement electronics and assembly.

LOW EMI DIGITAL DESIGN

I did a digital design that had very stringent EMI requirements. I did the layout on a 6 layer board with top and bottom layers ground plane. Top component layer “fan out” so all connections were very short traces to vias and all routing on the inner layers. I used “stitching vias” around the perimeter of the board to “stitch” the top layer ground plane to the bottom layer ground plane making the board essentially a Faraday cage. The board meets and exceeded all EMI requirements.
