I bought a partnership in a liquor group becoming a director and the operations manager of two stores with a staff complement of 15. Business slumped and was liquidated in 2002 due to deteriorating economic conditions.
I did the electrical estimating and planning for a number of electrical projects including the Du Toit's Kloof tunnel lighting project and the power stations then being built for Eskom. I was also part of the project management team for the Mossgas project and a multi-national project in Botswana for the Botswana Defence Force.
Siemens AG in Germany released a computerised project planning package called SINET primarily for use in the construction of power stations and I was tasked with testing and adapting the package locally and utilizing it.
Siemens SA had won contracts for the electrical installation at the power stations then being constructed in South Africa by Eskom including Tutuka, Lethabo, Kendal and Matimba. I did the planning of these installation contracts and also conducted in-house courses training electrical engineers in the use of computerised project planning, this being a fairly new concept in South Africa.
