Convict Life 1788
Convict Life – 1788
Convict Life depicts the journey of convicts and settlers of The First Fleet. The documentary re-enacts the way of convict and free settler life in the early years of the colony.
A convict's life was neither easy nor pleasant. The work was hard, lodgings were rough and the food none too palatable. Convicts were expected to work from sunrise to sunset. The men were given physically harder work than the women. Jobs they might have had include farm labourer, bricklayer, shepherds and working on chain gangs building roads.
The documentary is used as a school resource to illustrate the challenges facing our early settlers and convicts in building a life in this new land.
Teacher’s comment! "Some of the information in the program I didn't even know."
