I took a Notary class this past spring, most hospital are using Notaries to help families with 5 wishes and also medical power of attorney.To help families understand what the wish is foor the patient whon is ill.
RECREATIONAL THERAPY TO HELP PATIENTS IN REHAB.
I am taking a class on Recreational therapy which helps patients all ages during recovery time.For example a patient who had a Stroke. To help them reuse and gain strenght in the side that is weak from the stroke. Using to help calm patients down with behavior problems.
ASSURING PATIENTS AND FAMILIES YOU KNOW YOUR JOB
I had to get a treadmill for a patient one day. He kept asking me if I knew what I was doing,I assured the patient I have been a CARDIOLOGY/EKG TECH for 29 years.I got alot of my training on the job,and going to classes to keep up with my CARDIOLOGY skills. After I expalined the test to the patient and his wife.they both thanked me for knowing my job so well,and for taking care of him.I learned from the first time of patient care introduce your self to the patient and ask the patient his/her name.then let the patient know what you are going to be doing.That takes and makes the patient feel at ease.
DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE NO MATTER THE JOB
I took a class on this through my job,what an eye opener,During group discussions,most everyone said customer service is down no matter what type of work experience,Example patient complained of not getting medication on a timely manner,nurse excuse was I was on the phone with a family member.One thing I learned out of the class if you can not help out a patient or family member ask for help from a co worker.Team work is important no matter what the job is. A saying "The customer is always your pay check"
CLASSES FOR EMAR SENDING OUT REPORTS AND FAXING
With changes everyday in health care on faxing and sending out reports.I am in the process of taking classes for e mailing reports to the patients PCP.The patient will still have to go to Medical records dept. to sign a release form.the challenge is some PCP still perfer reports the old fashion way by mailing or faxing.some PCP prefer the new way.
I have been taking computer skills classes to learn more about using out look,keeping microsoft.Computer skills to do daily charges for the dept. and send by emial to the accounting dept.
TILT TABLE TESTING
Tilt table is very interesting to do. One day I got a patient ready and the Cardiologist and my supervisior came in to strap the patient to the table and start an IV.During the test the patient felt ok more into the test the patient got sick and the Cardiologist stopped the test. I grabe the vital signs and everything was normal ,patient spent the night in the hospital.I called our housekeeping team they came up to clean our room.The Cardiologist thanked everyone for excellence in team work
JOKING WITH CARDIOLOGIST
I did tradmills with one of our sports medicine Physician,3 patients who all had a positive treadmills.I got the Cardiologist and he went in and spoke with the patients after the test. Later that day I joke with him and said all of the treadmills I have done lately are positive,he joke back and said it was a "side business" we both laughed.All paitents had to recieve a stent.
PREADMISSION NURSES WHO ARE INPATIENT
One night I had to respond to 3 emergencies which happen within minutes of each other. A nurse form preadmissions called me and asked how much longer they had a patient who needed an EKG. I expalin my situtation which is emergencies come first.so when I got up there the nurse was rude and said you made me very inpatient with the patient I have been working,with, The following day I reported the nurse to her manager,at night I was the only one on and hopstial inpaitents come as a priority.The manager agreed with me and it never happen again.
GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR PATIENT WHO WAS RUDE
One day a patient showed up for an Event Monitor.The patient was in the ER the night before and the ER physician suggested the patient to get an event monitor. The patient showed up and was rude about the whole process,I had to call our Rep.to bring an event monitor,I told the patient she needed to go to admissions and register for the event monitor.while registering for the monitor she had imformed both admissions and myself she had no health insurance.Both admissions and myself got it worked out for the patient to get the even monitor

SAW is short for School At Work a new program designed approxamility 3 Years ago to help companies no matter what business to help employees keep up skills related to the company. I took a class for Patient Advocate and I am looking into a coding class.SAW program includes math,reading,typing skills.

I am in the process of renewing my CARDIOVASCULAR CREDITINALS, the test has changed over the years, I like keeping up on all Non-Invasive Cardiology procedures and all Cardiac medications.It helps me with my job everyday.
APPEARANCE AND ATTITUDE AT THE WORK PLACE
The hosptial i work at made us take a class and sign papers about appearance and attitude. The class came from a visitor about the appreance and attitued of a staff person taking care of there family member." the staff hygenine was horrible and so was the attitute.Attiuted is to treat all people with respect,and appreance is important to the patients,clean and pressed uniform,no prefumes or body sprays because of the patient care.Finding answers to questions for patients,visitors.
DEALING WITH FAVORTISM IN THE WORK PLACE
I took a class on this,to me I was suprised on how much managers favor certain staff in the work place. How much managers allow the staff in the dept's they manage get away with not pulling there fair share of the work load.I went through this and it had me look at staff in a different way.
AGENCY NURSE ATTITUDE
I was in the ER one day doing EKG'S, there are a lot of agency nurses working there. I was getting an EKG the agency nurse ask me if I knew how to do an EKG properly.I explain what the physician told me to do. Later on the day he asked me again if I did proper lead placemant, I spoke to the charge nurse and she said it was his personality not to take it serious.well I did and wrote a long letter to his agency that I did not work for him but the hosptial.I saw the nurse later on the night and told him do I tell you how to do your job he said no so I said never tell me how to do my job.he no longer works a the hosptial or agency.Other staff had problems with him.
WRONG REPORTS FROM DICATION SERVICES
The hospital dication services was putting the wrong reports for our Cardiology tests.I noticed it one day with 5 treadmill reports. I call the director of Medical Records. he asked me if it was critical or not, I told him yes,beacuse the Primary care physicians were looking for the results ,The treadmill reports were type under monitor reports. it made a hugh difference,after it got fixed the medical records dept,fax the reports to hte physicians for us.
I had to get an EKG one night on a patient before surgery. I looked at the hospital id for the patietn,Admitting dept.put the wrong hosptial band on this patient. I called the supervisor for the floor and for admissions. They came into the patients room and aploigized,the husband wanted to know why no one check the hospital band in the ER.All of the tests that were ordered for her was cancelled and redone at no charge.the husband thanked me and did write a letter to the corp.office and administrator. The patient had surgery the following day.
CRASH CART CHECK
A co worker said she had check our crash in the morning, when I go in it also gets check,I notice it was open.I spoke to the co worker and she did not have time to get a new crash cart,I called our central supplies dept.it 5 minutes we had a new crash cart.
COMMUNICATION WITH MEDICAL STAFF
Communication is very important when taking care of patients. For treadmill patient who came with high blood pressure.I called the nurse and asked if the patient was on any blood pressure medications,she told me no. We could not do the test because of the blood pressure.Patient got mad, and the nurse and physician put him on medciation the following day we did the test.
I took a class on how to be a Patient Advocate for Cardiology patients. Taking time to explain how to understand there medical treatment,treadmills with imaging,Echo's and monitors for there heart. Patients like things to be explained.I listen to there concerns and needs the patients thank me for be informative on this.
PHYSICIANS THAT ARE JUST DOWN TO EARTH
I had to get an EKG one night on a patient.I showed it to the physician.The physician told me to call her by her first name.She goes I am no different than you,except for being a physician,but you do alot of work to help patients.The physician and I are good friends
I had to hook up a patient for a holter monitor one day.I explained the monitor and what the physician was looking for.48 hours later he came back to have it removed he put duct tape over his chest.I had him remove the monitor.My years that was the first time I seen duct tape on a chest.
HAVING FUN WITH PATIENTS
I enjoy patient care,one day a patient started singing and she had me join her.I told her we would scare away the other visitors by my singing,she laughed and so did I.
PATIENT PASSES OUT ON THE TREADMILL
I hooked up a patient and got her ready for a stress test.I called the Cardiologist and he came in,during the first 2 minutes the patient passes out m on the treadmill,I called for an Emergency,the Cardiologist started CPR.The patient came around and ended up that day getting a pacemaker.The Cardiologist thanked me for a quick response in a stressful situtation.The patient thanked me the next day for my work in helping her.
SCHEDULING THE WRONG PROCEDURE
The hospital swithch from Cardiology staff scheduling procedures to central scheduling. A patient shows up one day and his order said Cardiolite treadmill,scheduling dept schedule it as a routine.I called the patients primary care physician and he told me it was a treadmill with imaging.I called our Nuclear dept.and they had a dose of medication and we did the treadmill test.The director of Radiology got the patient some lunch and paid his parking.The patient thanked all of his for our quick response going the extra mile for him.
I ttok a class as a Patient Advocate.Physician ordered a treadmill with imaging on an elderly patient.No one took the time to explain the procedure.I went and explain to the patient and her son and daughter in law all that was involved.They thanked me the next day for going the extra mile and being a good patient advocate for Cardiology Dept.
PATIENT SAFETY HERO
i went to do an EKG, I asked the patient her name and she had on the wrong hospital band,it was for another patient.The patients husband was very upset ,I got the floor charge nurse involved as well as the director of admissions,why no one took the time to make sure the patient had the correct hospital band.The patients physician thanked me and so did her husband.
