Scope of work appraised is fine art photography; documentary photography/ photojournalism; Hollywood stills; vernacular photography; historical archives such as William Henry Fox Talbot’s personal collection of photographs (his own and his contemporaries), family sketch books, notes and ephemera and photographs, glass plate negatives, sample books and ephemera from the Matthew Brady/Levin Handy Studio; nature or scientific photographs; books and manuals on the technique and art of photography; cameras and accessories and related ephemera.
A sampling of collections appraises: “African Americans from Slavery to Civil Rights”; “Gay and Lesbian Life Styles, 1840s to 1970s”; “Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War”; “New York and Brooklyn Under Construction, 1860s to the 1880s” (including the Brooklyn Bridge); the majority of vernacular photographs included in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, “The Art of the American Snap Shot, 1888 – 1978, and “Russian Photography from the 1920s to 2000”.
