I am PROUD of where I came from because I wouldn't be the person I was today unless I stood up for what I believe in.
I was born in 1959 and this is what was happening that year:
1959 vividly and entertainingly chronicles the all but forgotten but crucial year and draws provocative parallels to the promises and perils of our own time—exactly 50 years later. The microchip, the computer age, the birth-control pill, and the toppling of anti-obscenity laws; the emergence of free jazz, Pop art, “sick comics,” and independent films; the emergence of the space race, superpower diplomacy, Castro’s revolution, and the war in Vietnam; the birth of Motown, the rise of Malcolm X, and the start of official crackdowns on racism—these are some of the tectonic shifts of a year when the shockwaves of the new ripped the seams of daily life, when the idea took hold that everybody counts and the rulebook was rewritten on who could say or do what, when categories were crossed and taboos trampled, when we crossed into a “new frontier” holding the prospect of infinite possibilities but also instant annihilation—a frontier that we continue to explore today.
