Banner Biz

March 1997 - March 1997

I have always loved sewing and it has been part of my life...so it was a very natural decision to start Banner Biz.

My son was in High School and his Principal was looking for a banner to use in an Anzac Day march - and in other situations in the school. At the time I was appliquéing a wall-hanging so I showed it to the principal. He ordered a school banner and was delighted enough to order 4 smaller ones too.

Two months later the Principal phoned me and asked if I was making banners as a business. No. Then start - whoever sees ours wants to know where it came from. Can I give out your phone number?

And so Banner Biz was born in 1997. Since then I have created banners for numerous schools and clubs.

Owner

Banner Biz

January 1995 - January 2012

Banner Biz has been creating high quality banners for schools, clubs and private dwellings for 15 years.

We produce appliquéd banners and wall-hangings for promotional and ceremonial use.

Our largest project to date has been 7 Wall-Hangings, 1.7m wide x 3.5m deep for Nagle College, Bairnsdale, Victoria.

Attention to detail and superior workmanship is our competitive edge.

We can work with your logo or design, or assist in developing such, to create a functional artwork.

Printed music stand banners, vinyl and magnetic banners are also part of our range.

Maria has been sewing since she was about 14, these skills helping pay her way at University in Auckland, New Zealand. Her experience teaching in Adelaide for 2 years when first moving to Australia, and a long family history in Education, have been useful in dealing with schools regarding their banner requirements.

Manufacturer

Appliqeshon

January 1985 - February 1998

Appliqeshon began with the manufacture of appliquéd T-shirts for women and, with success, gradually added a range of other clothing. This business supplied boutiques from Adelaide and Sydney to Brisbane and Toowoomba. Our range of large size clothing was particularly successful.

Manufacture of women's clothing for Party Plan business, K-Sa-Rah, followed with Maria going into partnership with Kaye - responsible for the marketing of the goods.

This partnership flourished with 25 women selling for K-Sa-Rah at its peak.

Projects

NAGLE COLLEGE, BAIRNSDALE, VIC - 7 WALL-HANGINGS

These 7 House Banners/ Wall-Hangings for Nagle College in Bairnsdale, Victoria are the biggest project created by Banner Biz and certainly very challenging at the size of 3.5m deep x 1.7m wide.

These large wall-hangings:

have applique shields are 2.1m deep x 1.4m wide;
used 17,500 m of black applique thread;
9,750 m of bobbin thread;
68m black background fabric;
75m vilene.

Smaller banners at 95 x 130 each were created for the same college earlier in 2012.

Whereas with the small banners, some pieces of the applique were very difficult for being so small, the challenge with the wall-hangings was manouevering the bulk of fabric through the machine.

ST JOHN BOSCO COLLEGE, ENGANDINE, NSW - HOUSE BANNERS

These banners were 1.45 cm wide x 2.8 m deep. Lovely artwork and colours to recreate in stitchwork.

OUR LADY OF MERCY COLLEGE, VIC - MUSIC STAND BANNERS

These smart banners have a satin fabric band on the bottom instead of fringing and matching braid across the top.

LECTERN BANNER FOR AUSTRALIAN CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

This printed lectern banner looks great with coloured bands top and bottom to match the print.

REPLICA OF ORIGINAL RECRUITMENT KANGAROO MARCH BANNER for Wagga Wagga RSL Sub-Branch

Fabulous work to be involved with - I was approached by Dr Petrina Quinn of the Wagga Wagga Kangaroos WW1 Recruitment March - Centenary Project 2015 to see if I could recreate the banner used for the original recruitment march.
The only picture of the banner was not clear in detail, but after consultation with Petrina, and much research on each part of the original artwork, I decided on an interpretation that I feel has stayed true to the origninal artist's intentions.

ESPERANCE ANGLICAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WA - SPORTS HOUSE BANNERS

These banners were wonderful to create - such fabulous artwork, vibrant colours - albeit very detailed. Banner Biz was very happy with the final outcome - as was the college.

STELLA MARIS SCHOOL, BEAUMARIS, VIC - SCHOOL BANNER

90 X 120 banner appliqued with school logo and motto plus Pole System.
