Fishing Captain

Pubnico Ledge Fisheries Ltd.

September 1981 - October 1993

Captain of M.V. Janet and Jamie & the M.V. Master Jamie

I started as deck hand, and within a year I was part-time captain. By the end, I was running a million dollar fishing vessel for the same person I had started with, Frank d'Entremont, co-owner Pubnico Ledge Fisheries Ltd. in Lower West Pubnico Nova Scotia. He was owner of the two vessels I run, The Janet and Jamie (42' fish dragger) and the Master Jamie (a one million dollar, 60 feet long, high capacity fish dragger, which I was involved in the planning, building and operating right from the beginning). I was one of the top fishers in Pubnico, with a fairness and even tempered reputation in a high stakes, high stress industry.

I hold a Fishing Master Class IV License and a Radiotelephone Operators Certificate. I was tasked with all the day-to-day operations of the business (except for bookkeeping and accounting) like making sure I maintained a crew of two or three people, boat was in proper working order and all equipment properly maintained, nets ready to fish, etc. I was also tasked with catching over a million pounds of fish per year, which I did and most times overrun. I was also making sure the monies, as handled by the fish plant accountant, were divided fairly and my employer, the fish plant, my crew and myself got paid fairly and in due time.

I left the fishing industry for several reasons; the most important one was being able to spend more time with my family. I had always enjoyed drawing and had been involved in mass media as a published cartoonist since 1977, so when the TAGS program came along, I applied and qualified for retraining. I am one of only a few in this area that used the TAGS program for what it was meant for, get people out of fishing and into other employment. I chose Business, Information Technology and Applied Arts.
