Summary:

Marcel Back was born in Heidelberg, Germany.

During his high school years he developed a profound interest and lifetime passion for cinema. Right after graduation he worked in a video store while he did his alternative military service in 1998, followed by a first film internship in Munich in 1999. In the year 2000, he was a full-time employee for the software company SAP in the Department of Communications Media Training in Walldorf, Germany.

He started his academic education at the University of Mainz, Germany in 2001 with film studies as his major together with social and cultural anthropology studies as minors. Furthermore, he participated in basic camera and film editing workshops there. In addition, he worked student jobs as a cameraman for the local student television station Campus TV, in movie theatres, and as a freelance film critic. At the same time he held a student job as a sales control assistant for 20th Century Fox of Germany in Frankfurt am Main from 2003 to 2004, followed by a student employment at the Department of Documentation and Research for the major television network ZDF in Mainz from 2004 to 2007.

In Autumn 2007 he became a student of Film Directing at the German Film and Television Academy and moved to Berlin. Along with multiple hands-on workshops and further seminars, first steps into short films and cinematic finger exercises followed – in the narrative character-driven form as well as in documentaries. His latest experimental documentary short is titled “dead fish from berlin”.

He was awarded a scholarship from the federal German Academic Exchange Service DAAD in 2013, and is a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Film Directing at the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, USA.
