MSc Project: Entrapment of Enzymes in Reversed Micelles using Nanotechnological Concepts.
A new technique for entrapment of an enzyme in reversed micelles to enhance its activity by immobilisation was developed. Efficiency of the enzyme increased ten fold by this method and also showed better reusability and activity on entrapment. This study revealed that the enzyme present inside the unique micro environment of reversed micelles protect them against denaturation by the surrounding organic solvent, and enable enzymes to convert compounds present in bulk organic phase.

MSc Summer Project: Cellulase-free Xylanase Production from an Alkalophilic Bacillus Species in Bio-bleaching of Wood Pulp.
Cellulase-free xylanase, used for bio-bleaching of paper pulp, was purified from a microbial source (a new strain of alkalophiles) cultured on suitable media. Considerable attention was also given to convert xylan to alcohol using yeast strains to facilitate the removal of lignin during subsequent chemical bleaching, resulting in better pulp brightness.
This project was done at National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, and was sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
