Effects of stress on amygdalar neurons projecting to the medial prefrontal cortex
I developed tools that would allow one to identify neurons projecting to a particular brain area and study them using patch clamp electophysiology in rat brain slices. We were interested in the manner in which amygdalar neurons projecting to the medial prefrontal cortex are affected by stress. I combined retrograde tracing with patch clamp electrophysiology in acute amygdalar slices enabling one to study changes in projection specific neuronal populations. This strategy was also extended to study these neuronal populations using immediate early gene immunohistochemistry.
Effects of chronic stress on Intrinsic plasticity in the hippocampus
I was involved in a study trying to understand the effects of chronic immobilization stress on E-S potentiation, a form of intrinsic plasticity, in the CA3 region of the hippocampus. Though we did not find any effects of stress on this form of plasticity, in the process I obtained extensive experience in field electrophysiology.
