As part of a multi-disciplinary team I undertook Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of all Free
State Nature Reserves. The major components of the SEA were:
• Evaluation of each nature reserve in terms of natural and man-made resources. This was followed by a SWOT analysis to determine the value of the resource from a biodiversity and tourism
perspective and the capacity for the nature reserve to meet its tourism and biodiversity protection
objectives.
• The contribution of each nature reserve was also assessed from both a qualitative and quantitative
perspective. Duplications and gaps in the reserves resources and uses were identified and sustainability objectives formulated in terms of the nature reserves resources and programs.
• Alternatives approaches were identified and recommendations made by assigning optimum
categorization of each reserve based on the sustainability objectives.
