2nd Assistant Director
Burnt Onion Production
From January 2013
2013 Jan 13 Feb 21
This year I was hired as 2nd Assistant Director by Burnt Onion Productions. We were working on the second season of the SAFDA nominated sitcom "My Perfect Family", which stars a few South African Legends, such as John Lata, Bonginkosi Twala, Baby Cele and of course the great Lillian Dube. This was my first Studio GIG, which I quite enjoyed because the Assistant Director had enough confidence in me to allow me to floor manage a couple of scenes on a few occasions. Needless to say this was invaluable for my experience and has given me a great deal of confidence in my abilities as a Director and a command of my art. It is rather daunting to have to keep control of a set that boasts a cast such as this one and it is extremely rewarding when you successfully do so.
My duties at Burnt Onion Included, preparing camera cards, sourcing and casting of extras, ensuring cast is ready for each scene, liaising between production staff and crew and on the odd occasion managing the floor.
Researcher and Production Assistant
Tin Rage Productions
August 2011 - March 2012
I was hired as a researcher by the television production company Tin Rage Productions. They were commissioned by the SABC to produce a six part documentary series, which was provisionally called Medical Errors that deals with medical malpractice and negligence in both the public and private health care sectors. Although it is a small company, their work is reputable in the television documentary industry. Producing programs such as Solving It, which ran for four seasons, there is no questioning why they are award contenders every year. What Wessel van Huisteens is able to produce with a small crew and a limited budget is remarkable.
My duties at Tin Rage included:
Researcher; I had to investigate case studies, liaise with journalist and secure interviews with government organisations, health NGO's as well as various experts in the health care sector.
Production Assistant; I was required to assist on location shoots, translations on post-production and any supplementary administrational work as well as sub-titling of vernacular interviews.
2nd Assistant Director
June 2005 - May 2013
recently finished shooting an incredibly moving 5 part Mini-series for Mzansi Magic'Lokshin Bioscope movies called Vuka mawu'lele. The production was severely underfunded, considering we were shooting five 48 minute episodes in a month. Let's just say that the crew had to make monumental sacrifices that the most exploitative dictator may be too embarrassed to ask. The hours were gruelling, the pay was laughable, but the story and the talent was sensational. This shoot certainly opened my eyes and sent me back to school with regards to film making, but despite the great difficulties we faced, we managed to get a good quality product in the can. It showed me that when a crew believes in the story they are telling nothing can stand in their way. It also showed me that you are only as good as your weakest member and making movies is all about team work.
