Optimization of the Coaling Fleet at Boschmanskrans - BHP Billiton Energy Coal
The aim of the study was to investigate the factors influencing the coaling fleet performance at Boschmanskrans (BMK) mine and to optimize the fleet performance. This was to help BMK to reach its target (8 Mta) and sustain its productivity at low cost using the M/M/1 queueing theory model. The operation was reviewed and data was collected. The collected data consisted of time studies, rolling resistance, road designs and operating shift schedules. From the data, it was found that BMK has sufficient number of trucks and loaders, that is, 17 trucks and 6 loaders. The problem was in the operation. Over-trucking and under-trucking were practised in the operation. In conclusion, BMK already had the correct fleet size. All that had to be established was an effective fleet appropriation and assignment protocol.
