Conlan - Communication - Belfast, UK

Lisa Conlan

Belfast, UK

I love to write, listen and speak. I love words and working with people. Communication is something I am very passionate about. I enjoyed it immensely during my degree and it will always be something I want to improve and use as effectively as possible.

Work History

June 2012 - November 2012

I spent 6 months working and living in Raglan Backpackers mainly as the Receptionist but also as a cleaner. This hostel is very sports orientated - providing surf equipment, kayaks, bikes etc. which worked well with my passion for sport. I enjoy interacting with people. The owners didn't live on site so working in reception also required managing the hostel. This job required good communication skills, being responsible, being organised, timely and active and I felt very at home in this role.

Happy Apple Backpackers, NZ

December 2011 - May 2012

I spent 5/6 months working as a receptionist and cleaner in the Happy Apple Backpackers, NZ. I would clean in the mornings and work as a receptionist in the evenings. I was also paid to paint a mural at the entrance of the backpackers next to the office (the picture above). On occasion I managed the hostel while the owners were away on trips. I enjoyed meeting new people, being responsible and making the guests stay enjoyable and memorable. This was a role that suited my personality perfectly and I enjoyed the job very much.

Retail Assistant, Albany, Australia

Icky Finks, craft warehouse

July 2011 - November 2011

I worked in a craft warehouse in Australia for almost 6 months. This involved dealing with customers both at the till and on the floor. We also had to ensure that everything was stocked up. I really love working in retail, I enjoy the interaction, meeting new people, being responsible and the satisfaction of seeing a happy customer and I would be keen to work in retail again.

Children's entertainer/community Artist

I was a part-time face-painter in both Northern Ireland (Nov 2009-Nov 2010) and also while I was in Melbourne, Australia (Jan-June 2011). While I was in Australia I also learnt how to balloon twist. I love to learn new things and challenge myself.
I also lead various Community Arts workshops with a variety of different groups from Mothers and Toddlers to Teenagers from the Travelling community. I learnt a lot about teaching and being innovative. Again I loved the interaction with the groups and seeing how art helped them to express themselves. It was a therapeutic process for everyone involved.

Other work experiences prior to 2009/10
I have had lots of office experience gained over the years since 2004, mostly in advertising/marketing roles and office work. I have been a Marketing Executive (for a Telecommunications company), a Media Executive (in an online advertising firm) and a Production and Digital Executive (In a Rugby magazine). I have had my ideas implemented in many companies, worked freelance as a designer throughout University and also for a short period in a printing firm. I also wrote Art Reviews for an Arts and Culture website and I have been writing poetry since 2007, which will be published in a collection of poetry by various poets within the next few months.
My skills and experience are wide ranging. I am good with computers, worked in many offices, I'm naturally innovative and work well with people as a member of a team and as a leader. I have had many professional jobs where I have had to produce work to a high standard and business has always been one of my passions. I'm always thinking of the best way to benefit the company.

Sport and Fitness
I developed a passion for sport at 18, in 2000. I joined the Tae Kwon Do club shortly after I turned 19 and after 8 years I achieved my black belt in 2008. In 2010 I had been with the club for 10 years and when I went travelling for 2 years Nov 2010-Dec 2012 I found a passion for other sports such as...

Freelance Consultant/Researcher

McGarry Consult

I have worked for Liam McGarry at McGarry Consult as a freelancer on and off since 2008. I have been involved in a variety of projects from marketing and design ideas, logos, colour scheme, report writing, research, administration, tax returns, organisation of Liam's paper work and receipts. I have developed various systems to help Liam work more efficiently. I'm innovative and forthcoming with ideas and I am always looking out for effective ways to help the business. I am currently helping Liam work on a book project which is very statistic heavy. This requires me to be good at organising, communicating and problem solving. The work is flexible so I set my own hours and currently work 10-15 hours a week on average.

Visual Artist

Lisa Conlan

I made a commitment to myself to use my talents, produce art and put energy into my passion for creating. I have organised all my own exhibitions, ran the exhibitions as events, provided food and wine and an acoustic singer. I designed all invites and negotiated prices for frames and flyers and I have sold work throughout the world. I have painted various murals over the years both at home and while travelling and sold original paintings and prints at local markets and shops in NZ and Australia.
