Summary:

Generally my work involves developing a good background understanding of fluorine organic chemistry, through literature search and experimental work which is done ab-initio depending on the problems encountered by Pelchem. Studying the reactions systems employed at the Pelchem production plants, in particular the organic plants, is therefore inevitable.

Assisting with the establishment of the research laboratories at Necsa by adding on the existing laboratory equipment, and suggesting on necessary equipment to be installed in the lab. This makes it impossible to do without securing funding from NRF and related channels. Therefore my work also involves writing proposals and keeping an eye on available funding.

Finally Ketlaphela project necessitates that we keep abreast with current methods of partially fluorinating organic compounds for production of fluorinated pharmaceutical organic molecules and doing research on methods that could be used for beneficiation of Pelchem.

Work History

Research Scientist (Organic Chemist)

Necsa

From January 2008

Department: Applied Chemistry (OFC)
Duties include:

• Writing project proposals.
• Literature research on target organic molecules.
• Getting into the lab and actually synthesizing the target compound and its analogues.
• Monitoring the reactions by TLC and Purification by column chromatography or Flash chromatography.
• Preparation of the compounds for analysis.
• Analyzing or identification of the synthesized compound by 1H NMR and 13C NMR, IR and GCMS.
• Interpreting the results from the analyzing instrument.
• Report writing of the full projects as well as the literature studied before synthesis.
• Taking good care of the chemical store and keeping record of new and old chemicals.
• Presenting information using PowerPoint to different audiences.
• Interactions with potential collaborators in projects as well as finding funding.
