SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center
My position at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center is that of Chaplain. Specifically, I am a PRN Chaplain who responds to emergency calls during evening, over-night and weekend shifts; but, I also work day shift on weekends. When I am called to an emergency situation in the pediatric environment, my pastoral presence and emotional/spiritual support is generally focused on the family system to which the child in crisis belongs. That can require me to deal with two or three generations of that family who always represent the good, the bad and the ugly of the family who love a precious child. Sometimes my time is spent comforting a large group with words or song, but other times it may be just holding the hand a very traumatized teen mom. I also respond to trauma calls at adult hospitals for SSM.
In the last General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), those assembled voted for a resolution to study and research the results of the Christian Doctrine of Discovery on our denomination and the culture at large. Indigenous people around the world are the most oppressed and under-served peoples of the world. This initiative's intriguing social implications for ministry or the lack thereof is calling many people of faith to seek the truth about the misuse and abuse of minority peoples in general and American Indian nations in particular. The Disciples are joining a group of other faith groups who are or to hope to denounce the Christian Doctrine of Discovery and eradicate racism.
A ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to promote healing and restoration of those who are oppressed by racism and biases of institutional and cultural systems.
