Qualified Expert (RSA) for Waste matters on the Chapelcross site.
Subject Matter Expert for radiological characterisation in Magnox sites
Intelligent Customer for the site’s Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) characterisation projects, reviewing and providing feedback on calculations to the contractor.
Responsible for authorising personnel within the Waste dept. as competent Radioactive Waste Advisors (RWAs).
Provided support to Nuclear Safety department through technical review of safety cases and plant modification proposals.
Led the production of Waste Characterisation Documents to enable disposal of all site LLW streams.
Led the introduction of the metallic segregated LLW route on Chapelcross site - the first Magnox site to utilise this new waste route.
Led the implementation of Low Level Waste (LLW) disposal by incineration and legacy ILW graphite disposal.
Oversaw numerous characterisation projects, including the characterisation of 48,000 litres of blower house fan lube oil, heat exchanger small bore pipe work and the first steam turbine which has been released from site to Siemens.
Carried out audits of Clearance and Exemption arrangements at other Magnox sites
Regulatory liaison, regarding waste matters, with SEPA, ONR and NDA.
Coached and mentored team members and delivered Waste training to site personnel
Led and presented findings from event-based investigations to site learning review meetings.
Application of unique practical insight into HP issues
Has been able to use her in depth understanding of the responses of health physics instrumentation to the wide variety of plant radiological conditions encountered in reprocessing plants in order to solve unusual issues. This required the combination of the skills of a physicist along with practical operational experience which can only be gained by using hand held instrumentation in a wide variety of plant conditions.
This led to significant improvements in the assessment of stack discharge filter papers associated with ventilation streams across Sellafield site.
In 2011 won a prestigious innovation award in the Magnox i4 event for the use of Mercurad modelling techniques to dispose of legacy isofreights to the LLWR, involving detailed shielding calculations and the production of technical reports. This innovation saved the Company an estimated £500k, realising major safety benefits and improving stakeholder confidence.
