LILLI MULLER was born in Coburg, Germany. After some classes at the Kunstakademie in Nürnberg she moved to the United States in 1980 in search of—what exactly? Fertile creative lands, new experiences, fresh perspective, love?—whatever it was, she found it or something like it, and stayed. And made art.
Though best known for her body casts and the live performance-style events at which they are made, in truth she has pursued multiple threads throughout the years, more or less simultaneously, in overlapping cycles like tidal ebbs and flows, but in constant interconnection, one series with the other and all with the wider world. Through not only the casting but other sculptural forms and large-scale installation as well as painting, drawing and multimedia performances, she deconstructs and examines the events interior and transglobal, personal and political that inform her experience, running it all through the ever-present idiomatic filter of the human body. Muller’s work gives form, for the purpose of conscious contemplation, to the unspoken social contracts by which relationships are governed, confronting the boundaries that we allow to come between us, and inviting the audience play along in the game of surmounting the chasms. Giving the audience an opportunity to see beyond the traditional and formal presentation of the Art Object, Muller dares the viewer to interact and to marvel at a moment of self-discovery elicited by their own five senses.
