Phisics tutor

University of the Free State(BFN Campus)

January 2010 - November 2010

I was helping with the undergraduate practicals during the first and second semester. In the same year i was also doing honores in physics.

Honours student

Hermanus and Magnetic Observatory(HMO)

June 2010 - July 2010

I was doing a one month honours project in mathematical physics(plasma physics). In this project the plasma in the magnetosphere was assumed to be made of the three electron species(i.e., a field-aligned electron beam, hot and cool stationary electrons) and background ions. The kinetic theory of plasma waves/instabilities was considered to study the properties of the electron-acoustic instability driven by a field-aligned electron beam in a four-component plasma. It is important to mention here that i have used the kinetic theory because i wanted to study the kinetic effect such as Landau damping etc. The plasma in the study was assumed to be homogeneous and collisionless. My analytical and numerical results showed that the electron-acoustic instability could be supported in a four-component plasma. The effect of the electron beam on the frequency and growth rate of the electron-acoustic instability was also studied in detail. After realising that the electro-acoustic instability could be supported in the magnetosphere, i then studied the effect of this instability on the magnetospheric plasma. The detailed numerical analysis(using Mathematica) showed that the electron-acoustic instability could be responsible for the generation of electrostatic noise (such as Broadband Electrostatic Noise(BEN)) in the magnetospheric plasma.

Mathematics tutor

University of the Free State(BFN Campus)

July 2009 - November 2009

Helping first year students to solve mathematics(calculus and linear algebra) problems during tutorial sessions. In that year i was doing honores in mathematics.

Hermanus and Magnetic Observatory(HMO)

June 2008 - July 2008

Participated in the winter school that was hosted by HMO. The main focusing was on Space Physcs.
