Needs - Tunneling / Mining - Bangkok, Thailand

Leigh Needs

Bangkok, Thailand

Hi, to you if you are reading this brief summary, Communication I have found to be a highly important skill that I use in all facets and roles to all personnel I come in contact with from the CEO too my peers and all contractors on site. Being able to pass on knowledge information, praise and many A thank you, has enabled me to achieve many goals and K PI s, that other wise would have been missed.
30 + years working on many varied projects from high speed development mining , narrow vein, large stopes , cave block , sub level, vertical rises, shaft sinking, hydro dam excavation and tunnel development via twin shield TBM as well as road header cutting, all these methods in various ground conditions has given me the skill and incentive to learn about ground support and its importance of using the correct support, testing and re evaluating , combined with using many types of support.

Safety in the work place has played a large part of my supervisory roles and my experience in training and development has had a very positive results for the company , client and miners, as well as great satisfaction for my self.
A team player who can work independently a hands on approach who likes to exceed targets, whilst informing and guiding policy and procedures.
Thinking on the run and sometimes having to think out side the box being a pushy type who is a team player but who can work independently.

• Supervise 3 crews of 20 men during construction of 2x12m diameter road header tunnels

• Organised safety meetings, walks and talks, planning schedules

• Common ground support methods used: Spiral bars, shotcrete, lattice girders, concrete inverts, canopy
tubes and fibreglass dowels

• 12m diameter TBM set up, thrust rings, invert setting, tail skin, gantry rails, twin shield setup

• Ensuring low ground cover not breached, maintained quality control of cutting and ground support, shot

Underground Shift Supervisor

Byrnecut Mining, Telfer

• Organised shift of 50 men including miners, electrical, service and shotcrete crews

• Responsible for operation of 4 jumbos, 5 boggers and 10 trucks

• Responsible for development of inclines, declines, XC's XS's in cave block, bore fire and rock stabilising with gewi and split set bolts,

• Installing cable bolts in laminated ground, organising placement of sumps and pumps.

• Career highlight: 77 meters of development in one 12hr shift on deck

• Organised shift tasked with sinking 400m concrete lined shaft.

• Brought project in on time under strict project schedule.

• Explosive use in poor ground conditions.

Relief Site Manager / Master Sinker / Shift Supervisor

Byrnecut Mining

• Sites: Stawell, Queenstown, Kanowna Belle, Miitel and Mount Isa

• Shafts typically lined with concrete or shotcreted

• Miitel shaft required use of liquid polymer to seal surrounding ground to achieve dry shaft after sinking inside a cement grout curtain

• Achieved a dry shaft from 22 litres a minute water egress

• Projects included use of super sucker, air track drilling, jumbo shaft sinker

• Stawell shaft had noise restrictions, had to achieve maximum breakage with fewer holes, vibration and displacement restrictions followed.

• Kanowna Belle had two shafts, one vertical, one on 78 degree for CRF filling. Shafts had to intersect at specific depth to achieve client request

• Control of VODS, noise and displacement of fly rock in a large populated area.

• Working in frozen ground, working in high wet bulb conditions.
