Findings should reflect the benefit arising out of the proposed project.

Main project features:
The Government of Sri Lanka formulated the Mahaweli Development Program (MDP) to harness the Hydropower and Irrigation potential of the Mahaweli river water 95% for Hydropower and 41% for Irrigation development potentials of original MDP has been completed. The balance 59% of agriculture development is under the North Central Province Canal project. The diversion of water is facilitated from Moragahakanda Kaluganga reservoir to the North Central province of Sri Lanka. Carry out feasibility studies regarding to the above programme.

The water conveyance routes to identified areas under the feasibility study are;

i). NWP canal to feed about 12,000 hectares in Hakwatuna and Mi Oya basins of North Western Province
ii). Randenigala-Kaluganga-Morgahakanda-Upper Elahera canal-North Central Province canal with Kalinganuwara pumping main to deliver water to about 69,000 hectares in North Central Province and North Province.
iii). Maduru Oya Right Bank Canal and irrigation network to feed about 10,000 hectares in Eastern Province

Maduru Oya Right Bank Development Project

Main project features:
The Maduru Oya project was designed with the intention of providing irrigation facilities to 37,000 ha of irrigable land located downstream of the Maduru Oya reservoir via the left and right bank channels. Construction of the Maduru oya reservoir that has a capacity of 597 MCM was completed in 1982. The development of the left bank was initiated first and was completed in 1987. This project is to develop net irrigable area of 15,000 hectares of Right Bank of Maduru Oya. The project activities include: Modifying the Structure Plan, Updating Total Estimated Cost (TEC) and Preparation of Detailed Designs and Tender Documents for the Main & Branch Canals of Maduru Oya Right Bank', conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment in order to identify the impacts on the existing environment.
