RMB Unit Trusts is the 10th largest unit trust in South Africa, investing funds on behalf of institutions and the retail market. RMB Unit Trusts reports to Momentum and work closely with RMB Asset Management, RMB Private bank, First National bank, Momentum, independent financial advisors, multi-managers and various lisps.

National Sales manager
Head up RMB Unit trusts sales on a national basis i.e. all regional offices across South Africa report to me.

− R16 billion retail sales target
− Three regional office report to me i.e North, South and Coastal. These regional offices include staff in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, George, Free State, Polokwane and Nelspruit.
− Responsible for national sales strategies for the various distribution channels including RMB Private bank, First National bank, Momentum, independent financial advisors, multi-managers and various lisps.
− Ensure that relationships are managed and promoted in the various sales channels and sort out issues in these channels on a daily basis.
− Close working relationship with the investment team to ensure we carry out the correct marketing message. Given my quantitative and consulting background I have done a lot of quantitative work to illustrate the shortcomings in products to the investment team and to suggest improvements.
− Revamped the content of all our marketing material.
− Build a competitor analysis tool so that we could better understand our competitor positioning.
− Work with the product development team on new products and consolidation of current products.
− Work with the operations team to implement new systems that affect our clients such as paying commissions through an online system. We work closely with the operations team to sort out operations and service issues for our clients.
− Do a lot of work with the legal department to sort out client agreements.

Head of the Liberty Business Unit and Head of Client Solutions

Stanlib is the third largest investment management company in South Africa, investing funds on behalf of institutions, th retail market and Liberty. Stanlib is owned by Liberty.

I had two roles at Stanlib namely Head of the Liberty Business Unit and Head of Client Solutions (Mainly Service). The roles are described below.

Head of Liberty Business Unit
− Manage the relationship between STANLIB and Liberty on an executive level.
− Deal directly with CEO's of the two business.
− Changed Liberty's benchmark and assisted in re-aligning the portfolios
− Point out shortcoming in products
− Proposed new mandates
− Monthly Asset and Liability meetings
− Day-to-day queries

Head of Client Solutions
− Set up an institutional client service division in STANLIB. The Team (5 people) was responsible for servicing around 200 institutional clients in excess of R120 billion. The client solutions team had the following functions:

− Write comments for quarterly reports
− Do quarterly report backs to clients
− Work on investment solutions for clients with the portfolio manager
− Drive positive customer experiences
− Sort out client queries
− Design and implement publications
− See that we meet compliance requirements
− Implement higher service standards
− Promote client relationships through regular meetings, entertainment and trustee training

− Identify client needs and work with product development team on new products
− I initiated new product ideas for example the cash plus fund and CPI+3% Fund.

Investment Solutions
− Recommendation of SWIX as the new equity house view benchmark which improved STANLIB's competitiveness, reduced risk and improved performance based fees as the SWIX has a 54% probability of being outperformed compared to 10% for the ALSI
− Recommend content for portfolio review meetings and set up the analyses, now maintained by the quants team.

Head up the Johannesburg office of RisCura,- Client base of R450 billion. Serve on RisCura Board and Management Committee. Head up consulting, manager selection and business development / sales. Sell and consulted to large and small corporate clients ranging between R20 million and R33 billion.

− Manage the Johannesburg office - 12 people and involved in the management of a further 26 people the Cape Town Office through the Management Committee and Board.
− Main responsibilities included head of consulting, manager selection and business development (sales)
− Implement optimal processes and standards.

Business Development
− Prepare new business proposals
− Present at new business pitches
− Negotiate new deals - have penetrated new markets for RisCura
− Product development -have developed a number of new products and product enhancements for RisCura.
− Get new leads

− Consult to institutional retirement funds on investment strategies, selection of investment managers, strategy implementation and monitoring of risk and performance (Consultant to 12 funds in excess of R50 billion), setting up multi-manager structures for large clients and then managing these for them.
− Consulting includes a service component of clients such as quarterly report backs and sorting out queries
− Trustee training and member communication
− Write articles, present at seminars, television interviews.
− Involved in setting industry standards through Institute of Retirement Funds.
Manager Selection
− Head up manager research and selection. Conduct both qualitative and quantitative research. Quantitative research includes a range of statistical analyses of investment managers and optimal blending of these investment managers and investment mandates within a risk budget - like a "portfolio manager of investment managers". Qualitative analysis includes visiting investment managers and writing an evaluation report.
