Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation
June 2005 - January 2011
Provide hydrological technical advice and support to staff within the Wheatbelt Region, primarily on:
Natural Diversity Recovery Catchments (Toolibin Lake, Lake Bryde and Lake Coyrecup) – developed and reviewed hydrological monitoring programmes; analysed and interpreted hydrological data to identify catchment processes and trends (particularly in relation to how hydrology effects conservation values) and evaluated management actions. Undertook site assessments and identified appropriate hydrological management. Planned, designed and supervised construction of surface water management works (including 5 km long conveyance channel).
Assisted DEC staff in management of hydrological issues in reserves – reviewed monitoring and analysed and interpreted data at Lake Magenta Nature Reserve; planned, designed and supervised construction of surface water management works (Lake Magenta Nature Reserve). Reviewed and assessed existing surface water management (Lake Magenta Nature Reserve).
Coordinated DEC Regional response to groundwater drainage – developed protocols and tools for staff to use to assess Notices of Intent to Drain; provided advice to staff and support during site assessment. Reviewed and updated the Wetland Rapid Assessment Protocol.
Wagin/Woodanilling Landcare Zone
January 2000 - June 2005
Assisted community to develop a land and water management strategy and prepare strategy documents. Assisted farmer and community groups to develop sub-catchment plans. Supported groups and individuals to develop land and water conservation projects and advised land managers on ground investigation and appropriate conservation measures. Developed GIS linked landcare project management system and cost share calculation tool based on landcare outcomes.
Developed monitoring and evaluation programmes; data acquisition,
manipulation and mapping.
Provided community input to regional NRM Strategy and Investment Planning, member of working groups associated with these. Supported Blackwood Basin Group and Blackwood/upper SWCC NRMOs prepare projects for SWCC Investment Plan.

Toolibin Lake - Millers Block surface and groundwater assessment
Assessment of surface and groundwater issues in Millers Block (70 ha east of Dulbinning Nature Reserve in the lower eastern subcatchment of Toolibin Lake Natural Diversity Recovery Catchment), in 2012/13 for Department of Environment and Conservation. Hand drilled to identify soil profiles and water table depths, RTK survey to ground truth lidar and other available high resolution (but not terribly accurate) topographical data, analysis of bore monitoring data and surface water monitoring data. Made recommendations for works to improve surface water conveyance, including arrangements of proposed revegetation of the block.
Supervised works to improve culverts and surface water mangement works.
Wagin Woodanilling Landcare Zone Action Plan
Revised and updated WWLZAP, 2013. Incorporated maps to assist with targetting areas for different threats and quantification of management targets.
Stage 2 of the Lake Ewlyamartup improvement project (2011) - investigation of several options put forward by the working group (community), including development of a simple water and salt balance model to test the variety of options against a number of criteria endorsed by the working group. The criteria included a minimum lenght of time that water levels stayed above a certain level, a maximum length of time that water levels were above a certain level (related to fringing vegetation inundation), and water quality was below a certain level when water levels were suitable for recreation/water bird use. Recommendations were made as to the most suitable option (a set of works), and preliminary designs prepared.
in 2011/12, prepared whole farm plan for Mannabutting - 1300 ha farm in the western Wheatbelt. The plan included surface water management on slopes and valley floor, revegetation (block, alleys for biodiversity as well as stock fodder), refencing (changing paddock alignments), waterway protection, and water supply improvement.
In 2012, pegging and supervision of contruction of approx. 19 km of surface water management works.
Farm Water Supply Planning Scheme Auditing Tool
Farm Water Supply Planning Scheme is a long running programme of Department of Water, providing funding to farms in the < 600 mm rainfall areas for improving water supplies. Audit Tool built in MS Excel 2013/14 to enter all a farm's water supplies and demands, perform some analysis, and provide a basic water balance to present water deficiencies. Works are entered to address the deficiencies and a basic report prepared containing a summary of the data, water balance and actions.
Project Management/GIS Interface
Construction of a project management interface with GeoMedia (GIS software) for Wagin Woodanilling Landcare Zone. Built in MS Access in 2005, provided for input of project details and external funding amounts, payments etc as well as spatial information (link to GIS) of area/length and location etc at planning an post implementation. Recorded financial as well as physical details of projects.
hydrological database interface - Fiji Min. of Agriculture
Construction of Access interface to enter manually collected estuarine river flow data with export to HYDSYS (proprietry hydrological database); 1997-8; Fiji Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Land and Water Management Division.
SWCC soil sampling
collection of soil samples on 26 farms in 2013/14 summer, together with preparation of farm paddock and nutrient maps
DAFWA soil sampling
2 year contract (2013-1015) to collect soil samples on around 30 grazing farms per year. 2nd year preparation of farm maps and nutrient maps
