Administration, events and training coordinator
January 2012 - May 2013
Reporting directly to the CEO of this large national construction company, duties included managing procurement of equipment, insurance etc., cafeteria management, and planning, implementation and coordination of training and events. I was also in charge of overseeing our company's relocation to new offices, and managed the installation of facilities and equipment. In addition, this role required me to liaise with foreign clients and to interpret (Korean to English and vice versa) for other Audi and WeBON staff.
August 2010 - November 2010
As an undergraduate, I worked on an apartment complex construction site as an assistant electrician. I realized that the quality of the building depends on the workers. The quality of the construction is a critical element determining the building's life expectancy and the cost of maintaining and fixing problems.
May 18 Memorial Foundation
August 2009 - April 2010
Also during my university years, I worked at May 18 Memorial Foundation in Korea as a volunteer. Part of my role was to arrange international events and provide interpretation, coordination and support. At the end of the internship, I applied for the position of international intern at a development organisation in India. There I helped with various types of conferences and also translated and managed the Korean language newsfeed. In addition, I researched and wrote an article on the construction of a new nuclear power plant in India. Most news pieces pointed out only the positive effects of nuclear power. I decided to draft a more balanced article. I wrote five pages about nuclear energy and renewable energy sources. My article was published in the newsletter issued by a major Asian organisation, Forum Asia.
Equipment Installation Assistant, Woo Lim ENC, Korea
January 2007 - April 2007
While saving money to study in Canada, I took a job with WooLim ENC. I worked as an assistant engineer at a police station and an apartment complex site. The job involved installing fire fighting equipment in the buildings, including water pipes and fire detectors. Through this position, I learned about the structure of different buildings and the essentialness of safety.
Creative thinking in practical design
When I was a university student, I designed a system supplying water to my father's tea farm in Korea. The main problem was how to supply the farm with enough water on a limited budget. After careful thought and planning, I designed a solution in the form of a pool which would naturally purify the water, along with a small tank which was connected via pipes to a 200 litre water tank at the farm. My father and a construction worker took my design and installed it. As a result, the farm has a constant, sufficient supply of water at zero cost.
Communication, presentation and leadership skills
When I was writing my thesis at university, I had the opportunity to develop my leadership and presentation skills while carrying out a group project and presentation on the theme of energy. When the discussion came to an impasse, I was able to persuade other colleagues to decide on one idea using wood pellets which are made from natural sources and burn easily. Our project was based on a simulation of a pellet-making factory. Our objective was to reduce the cost of heating. Through peer training, we prepared a clear, comprehensive thesis presentation. Each of us presented the project to the class. Prior to the presentation, the group made a list of expected questions to ensure that we could answer any queries. We achieved an excellent grade.
Team work, mediation and interpersonal skills
While at university, I won first prize in a competition as part of a study group called C.E.O. (Chemical Engineering Organization). The Chemical Engineering Student...
