Battle - Fundraiser - Wakefield, England, UK

Kirsten Battle

Wakefield, England, UK

Born into a philanthropist family I have been fortunate in being able both understand and benefit from the third sector. My specific interest is in fundraising, which has been my passion since I was nine when I set up my own business in response to the African famine. I also assisted my Parents who ran the local Scout group, Competitive Music Festival and NSPCC Committees, as well as the many school fundraisers and the sponsored events with which children typically get involved. As an adult, I offered my skills to the Make A Wish Foundation and held the position of Administrator to the Regional Officer with both charities. My particular passion was encouraging young people to fundraise and I strongly believe in the way in which this can be used to encourage marginalised people to build their soft-skills, confidence, and problem solving skills with the hope of finding employment in an already over burdened work market. Added to this, whilst on work placement at university, I created a successful youth project called “Giz A Chance” which combined the teaching of basic skills to young people with learning difficulties with the arranging of a sponsored tenpin bowling event. In three months, the young people gained skills such as independent travel, basic budgeting and office skills. The event raised an amazing £1,500 with just 30 people for the host charity but for me the best outcome was that four of the six young people obtained a volunteering role in a community café with another obtaining a place on a mainstream college course.

My experience has enabled me to gain knowledge of the disciplines surrounding fundraising, such as the regulations involved in asking for money from the public. Working for a charitable Trust I have also gained an insight into the great value of the donors and supporters and of the increasing benefit offered by the Internet and social networking sites. I am currently studying a formal qualification from the Institute of Fundraising.
