Sample lesson plan: writing practice for age 9 intermediate learner
Materials: Magazine, Lined Paper, Plain Paper, Crayons, Pencil
Focus: Future tense forms, Body parts and Gestures, Imagination descriptions
What I already know exercise: 1. Have learner practice some sentences using future tenses (simple, continuous, perfect).
2. Have he/she act out some gestures and goof off a bit while saying what they are doing to review names of body parts and gestures (waving, bending, standing, etc.)
Understanding the concept exercise: 1. Go through magazine and find a person doing an activity.
2. Talk about what is happening in the picture together (where are the person’s hands and feet, where are they looking, what are they holding, what is their face expressing?)
Activity Instructions: If I was a statue, I would look like this activity. Talk about all your body parts: how would they look, where would they be hanging or be placed, what will they be doing or holding? In what direction would you be looking? How will your hair be styled? Be as creative and descriptive as you can possible be!!! Act it out before writing it down if it helps you to imagine. When you are finished describing your character, draw your statue step by step according to how you described it. . Have fun!
If I was to be turned to Gold and frozen like a statue to never move again…I would choose to be stuck like this…
**Tutor’s note: During this type of exercise, I look at what vocabulary, grammar, and fluency aspects of the learner’s language need improvement. This helps me get a sense of where the student is, so that I can better assist them in meeting his/her goals.
