High Performing Teachers

• Set High Standards (no opt out/nobody fails, right is right, format matters).
• Ask following up questions to check for understanding and allow for extending knowledge (applying knowledge; asking how or why or making students support their answers with evidence) while differentiating instruction tailoring to each specific student.
• Be positive (make the content sound interesting and exciting)

• Standards for next month (unit planning first; daily plans flow together)
• Objectives for each day (1-2; what will my students understand today?)
• Determine Assessments
• Determine Activities to meet Objectives/Standards
• Data Driven (analyze why students missed a question; how to teach something better)
• Pre-scripted higher level questioning (Bloom’s Taxonomy; T-chart)
• Over Plan (list every teacher queue/question & every student step/activity)

• Manageable, Measureable, Made First, Most Important
• Post Objectives in the classroom
• Keep activities simple so that Objectives are reached within one class period

• Hook the students
• Show them how to do something, do it together, allow them to do it on their own until they succeed and master it (give them time to repeat it many times)
• Break the task down into manageable tasks that can be accomplished (help them to succeed at each task; SCAFFOLDING)
• Check for understanding (ongoing = questioning, sampling, gathering data)
• Differentiate Instruction to meet the individual needs of each student (i.e., learning styles, multiple intelligences, academic strengths, dec. making, etc.)
