I am at heart a caring and responsible person and I felt my serving the community in which I live was a way I could help to make things safer and better for the future of my children.
During my service I worked at Newton Le Willows, St Helens and Prescot Police Stations in a variety of roles, including C.I.D. Plain Clothes on targeted operation, and latterly as a Community Beat Officer working with the community and maintaining a high level of flexibility and commitment to the service and public, working with other agencies such as local authorities, residents and trades associations, schools and community associations. I had to recognise problems and decide what courses of action were available, which would be more pertinent to the specific problem and adopt a multi agency approach. This took up a great deal of time and effort, but the rewards made this worth the effort, despite the many frustrations which the job also entailed.
During my time with the service I was commended on several occasions for the dedication to duty and good work in the arrest of numerous criminals. I was also commended by one of H.M Judges at the Crown Court following the arrest of a male armed with an axe who was intent on causing injury to prevent arrest. I was recommended for another bravery award after the attempted rescue of a child in a house fire. These awards are rewards for dedication to duty shown by all Service Men. I happened to be the person on the spot and regard them as being part of the job requirements, however it would be true to say I am proud of my awards for a job well done.
I am an advanced driver to Class one standard with a clean driving licence. I was forced to retire in 1992 following injuries received in a traffic incident which I was rammed off the road by two stolen vehicles, the drivers of which were intent on causing injury to...
