Barnes - Writer/Artist - Ashbourne, England, UK

Kelda Barnes

Ashbourne, England, UK

I am a writer, poet, and budding illustrator. I have an Msc in human ecology, an approach that recognises the problems we face in the world are interconnected, and have to be both understood and addressed as a whole. It seeks a balance between head, heart and hand. My first degree was politics with law.

Work History

Creative writer and poet

January 2009 - January 2009

I am currently based at home, working on prose and poetry projects which ask social, ecological and spiritual questions. I believe language, especially when spoken, has the potential to engage people at a depth that facts and figures can't. I am interested in the power of sound and spoken language, in the role of writing in helping people connect with their own voices, and how writing and art can effectively challenge the status quo without resorting to political rant.

Green Finger Project

Freelance, in partnership with Ashbourne Festival and Derbyshire Libraries

April 2009 - July 2009

The Green Finger Project was an international initiative designed to raise awareness and influence decision-makers in the run up to the 2009 Climate Change Summit. It sought worldwide contributions of photographs and video showing what people most wanted to protect from climate change.
In order to make a substantial contribution of material for the Project, as well as engage local people with the issues, I worked together with a class of local primary school children to create an exhibition, and ran two public events as part of the Ashbourne Festival.
The exhibition showed Green Finger photographs of the childrens' hands, showing what they wished to protect, as well as some of their poems. The events attracted many more contributors from the general public, and the overall number of photographs we were able to upload numbered around 100.
(Although the website is now defunct, many Green Finger videos from around the world are still viewable on YouTube).

MSc student

Centre for Human Ecology

September 2005 - June 2008

Human Ecology is a revolutionary holistic approach that emphasises the relationships between personal, social and ecological crises in the world.
For my thesis work I investigated the effectiveness of environmental education in primary schools, focussing on the Eco Schools programme and exploring the experiences of local teachers. I questioned whether current mainstream approaches go deep enough to challenge the anti-ecological values underlying the wider curriculum.
I also took modules in Sustaining Ecosystems, Ecopsychology and Spiritual Activism.

Volunteer Officer

BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers)

February 2005 - August 2005

I worked under the Project Officer, developing publicity materials for public events and courses. This included writing, designing and editing press releases, posters and leaflets, as well as creating an exhibition explaining the importance of insect life. I also assisted with planning events, and supervising volunteers on conservation projects.

Conservation volunteer on Garonga Conservation Project

Mpilo Conservation Experience

May 2001 - July 2001

Working within a privately-owned wildlife reserve adjacent to Kruger National Park, assisting with conservation research as part of a small team. This included behavioural research with spotted hyenas, white rhinos and elephants, as well as essential conservation tasks such as tackling soil erosion.
