My role with Knowaste, the UK's first nappy and absorbent hygiene products (AHP) recycler was as their Local Authority Business Development Manager.

My role was to build business relationships with local authorities to enable them to recycle nappies rather than send them to landfill.

The products of Knowaste's recycled waste stream are plastic pellets and fibrous material which can be used in many industrial applications.

Knowaste are based in Kelvin Way, West Bromwich. The company has worked closely with Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council to locate the UK's first nappy recycling facility at the heart of the country's motorway network near to junction one of the M5.

I worked in the Rating Team at LSH, joining the company on the day the former Property Consultants Neale and Aldridge were bought out by Lambert, Smith, Hampton, April 3rd 1989, and leaving in April 1993 to work for Birmingham Property Services, the property consultancy of Birmingham City Council on a temporary contract until I joined Locate in Birmingham in October 1994.

I worked as a Tax Officer after leaving the University of Birmingham in July 1979 following a serious illness. I left the Inland Revenue to go to university as a mature student in October 1984 to study history to qualify as a secondary school history teacher. I trained to teach secondary history by undertaking a Postgraduate Teaching qualification (PGCE) at the University of Birmingham in 1987/88. I left my PGCE after an offer to work as a Rating and Agency Surveyor at Neale and Aldridge in Birmingham. The day I joined Neale and Aldridge, the senior partners decided to become part of a larger property company Lambert Smith Hampton, also based in Birmingham. I worked as a Rating and Agency Surveyor, occasionally working as a Management Surveyor with our then major client The Calthorpe Estate. Other major clients included most of the major water companies, including Thames Water, Severn Trent Water and Yorkshire Water. We also counted some of the major Birmingham manufacturers amongst our clients, Lucas, Alcan, IMI, LDV and other now long-gone industrial giants then based in Birmingham.
