My teaching methodology

I have been teaching pupils of all ages with great results for the past seven years.
Over these years I have developed a unique methodology of breaking down subject content into its fundamental core components and then building it back up again with the student in a manner which is simple to understand yet hard to forget. I have taken pupils from being predicted Es and Fs to getting As and Bs in a relatively short space of time. Private tuition is different to school in that I am able to see and understand exactly what the pupil is struggling with and how to go about changing that. In school, pupils often feel too embarrassed to raise their hand if they don't understand something or maybe they were busy chatting to friends when the teacher explained something important and are worried to admit they weren't listening. This doesn't happen in one-to-one tuition. My students are always surprised at how easy to understand even some of the more complex topics can be if they're broken down and explained effectively.

I am based in Burton-upon-Trent but I can travel to some areas in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and all over Staffordshire. However, for those pupils who don't live nearby, I also provide online lessons via Skype. I use special on screen "whiteboard" technology to enable me to keep the lessons interactive.

I use all my own resources that I have developed to coincide with my teaching methodology. I work closely with the exam board specifications to ensure that the students know and understand everything they're required to. When I first begin I have a quick run through of all the topics in a certain module or particular theme to get a look at where the weak areas lie. Then I start to break down these areas of confusion into more comprehensible chunks.

Once the smaller chunks of information have been learnt I practise with the student to make sure that they are fully understood and I use exam style questions to show the student how to use this knowledge in the exam. I have a special way of helping a student to remember what they've learnt and that's through the use of cue cards. I explain a topic fully but only write down the basic ideas on the cue cards. It's then up to the student to relay the information to me only using the few bullet points on the cards. It's a great way of getting the information secured into the long term memories of the students in a very short amount of time. After two or three times of the student going over the same information they can very often do it without the cue cards and have inadvertently developed a good way to explain the topic in their own words; something which is priceless in the exam.

One of the more important aspects of exam revision, but one which is often left out by some tutors, is exam specific questions. It's important for the pupils to know exactly what sort of questions they're going to be asked and how they should answer them in order to gain the higher marks. I have a vast resource bank filled with hundreds of exam questions from all the main exam boards: Edexcel, AQA, OCR and WJEC, which I constantly use in all my lessons.
