EDGE DRAWING AND EDGE LINKING BY KOVESI ALGORITHM
Edge detection is a fundamental tool in image processing and computer vision, particularly in the areas of feature detection and feature extraction, which aim at identifying points in a digital image at which the image brightness changes sharply or, more formally, has discontinuities. By detecting edges we can reduce the amount of data to be processed, find shape and size of objects in image. Till now canny edge detector is used in image processing for detecting edges, since it produces best result.
We propose a new edge detection algorithm that works by applying Kovesi algorithm on sobel gradient image instead on any edge detected image. The performance tests show that our algorithm produces more detail of image when it is applied on sobel gradient image than on canny edge detected image. Thus more amount of detail has been retained for further processing. We believe that our algorithm is a novel step in edge detection and would be very suitable for the next generation real-time image processing and computer vision applications.
