MANUFACTURING OF GRATE BARS FOR ASSEMBLY WITH SRC IN SINTER PLANT
Sinter is one of the charge materials, which is used in making iron in the blast furnace. Sinter is reduced in sinter plant by a process called as sintering.
Sintering is agglomeration (jumbled cluster or mass of varied particles) of fine mineral particles into a porous mass by incipient fusion caused by heat produced by combustion within the mass itself. Iron-ore, coke breeze, limestone and dolomite along with recycled metallurgical wastes are converted into agglomerated mass at sinter plant. This results in sinter, i.e. 70 – 80 % of iron-bearing charge in blast furnace. The vertical speed of sintering depends on suction that is created under the grate.
Grate bar is used to crush limestone and dolomite along with other metallurgical waste. The structure of grate bar is such that it has taper at one end of it and along the same end of the taper the surface should be perpendicular, i.e. the taper surface and perpendicular surface should be maintained along the same side of the grate bar at both the ends. It is difficult to get this particular cross-section, by normal conventional machining process (on a lathe), because it requires machining in 2 sections or 2 planes. It takes a lot of time and proper tolerances are not obtained when normal conventional machining is applied. This particular structure is difficult to manufacture with proper centre axis and tolerances maintained.
So to avoid extension in lead time of production and to achieve proper tolerance in dimensions, a fixture is designed in such a way that it does not require any centring and marking procedure. Required tolerances and structure of grate bar is achieved by placing it on fixture and lifting it up and undergoing milling operation on both the surfaces one after other. Thus the required grate bar for assembly in single roller crusher is obtained with required tolerances and is used for sintering to produce sinter. This Grate bar is manufactured in the CMS (central machining shop) of steel plant.
