Julie Rezac makes gravestones, memorial plaques, and house stones. She practices the old craft of lettercutting which is a mixture of art, design, and many hours spent with a hammer and chisel. Each stone is designed as an artwork and then carved by hand.
Originally from the U.S., Julie first discovered her love of carved letters while visiting old cemeteries in Ireland. Every memorial was a lively original and had a story to tell. This was very different from the modern graveyards she'd seen in the States. Julie later discovered that the letters on the old gravestones were cut by hand and not sandblasted like most modern stones. A careful craftsman - with an artist's eye - had designed and carved each letter.
Most people know they want something special but don't know how to give it form. An artist can help translate emotions and ideas into a physical object. Julie works closely with her clients and the design evolves from their conversations. They look at photos, tell stories and share memories. A sense of tone, style and intention are gradually revealed. These qualities form the essence of the lettered stone and they determine the final design.
