Pick the best

Signing up for martial arts classes is a great idea for everyone as this will not only help you get fit but also teach you how to defend yourself in case of an emergency. There are plenty of self-defense tools today, but your body is the only one you can rely on in any situation. Therefore, everyone should know how to use it to effectively disable an attacker. Training in any kind of martial arts will increase your strength and stamina and improve your general health greatly.
  • With martial arts classes you will be able to learn a great number of martial arts. The most popular classes are jiu jitsu, taekwondo, karate, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, kung fu, capoeira, kendo, muai thai, and tai chi. Each of these martial arts has its specific strengths, so you’ll need to do a bit of research to decide which class suits you best. Consult a professional martial arts trainer and your doctor to make the right decision.
  • Bark can put you in touch with suppliers offering a variety of mixed martial arts classes and specialized self-defense courses. You can try these groups if you don’t want to focus on a single type of martial arts. Mixed classes are extremely versatile, so you’ll need to talk to each trainer individually to find out their approach.
  • Martial arts classes are great, but you can enhance your physical training by complementing them with other types of exercise. Bark can help you find swimming and yoga classes as well as personal trainers who can develop a personalized training and nutrition program that will allow you to achieve your fitness goals.

Hall County Karate

Welcome to Hall County Karate! We specialize in teaching traditional Japanese Karate for our modern world. We have classes for children and adults, and for any level of fitness. Hall County Karate teaches traditional Japanese Karate. This means that we only teach martial arts that are effective for self defense. We don't focus on teaching techniques for show, or for practicing for tournaments. Everything that we do in our classes keeps alive the original purpose of the martial arts -- keeping yourself safe if you ever have to defend yourself. While Karate focuses on teaching self-defense, it has many other rewards, too. Karate teaches focus, goal setting, mental and physical discipline, and develops an individual’s confidence as they master these traits. Karate also can be a fun activity that can help anyone reach their fitness goals, such as weight loss, strength training, or improving endurance. Hall County Karate is veteran-owned and its chief instructor, Todd Irvine, is committed to serving his community. We offer classes through the City of Gainesville’s Department of Recreation so that the highest quality instruction is available to our community at very affordable rates to the Gainesville and Hall County communities.

What do you love most about your job?

My passion is for teaching and keeping the traditional martial arts alive. I've been teaching now for over twenty-five years, and have been teaching in Gainsesville since I moved here a few years ago.

I started training Karate when I was a kid, and have kept going for 30 years. It has kept me fit, given me focus and discipline that helped me get through college, and (of course) taught me self-defense. I have also served in the military for over 11 years, where I taught hand-to-hand combat and learned that Karate is very effective.

What inspired you to start your own business?

When I first moved to Georgia, I wanted to continue my martial arts training, and also have my children start training. As I looked around in Gainesville, Flowery Branch, and the other areas close to me, all of the martial arts schools that I found taught "modernized" martial arts, with a focus on sports. When I couldn't find a dojo that met my needs, I started teaching on my own. My goal was to offer my community access to a true martial art that focused on learning to defend oneself if the need ever arose.

Why should our clients choose you?

Clients who choose Hall County Karate (and who keep training over time) want to learn a martial art for defense. They don't want to learn techniques that would look good on a movie screen, but instead want to learn what will keep them alive if they ever need it. It is true that student will learn discipline, focus, and Karate can help you with fitness and weight loss goals. But, the purpose of our class is to learn self defense.
