My son did one week of Pa Kua battle camp this summer and LOVED it! He thought the teacher was great, and really enjoyed that he got to learn how to do all sorts of different things (archery, sword fighting, etc). He especially enjoyed the excursions to the nearby park. I'm really thrilled that we won this gift certificate in our school auction at Micheltorena Elementary. We'll definitely be coming back here again!! More...

Taught us a bit of history, made sure to stress safety and taught us technique and form very quickly/effectively. All four of our group were nailing targets left and right by the end. Great instructor, great class, WAY more fun than I thought it would be.I'm definitely going to go back and after posting a vid on IG, I have friends that are probably going to come as well. This is the best school to offer techniques in multiple programs like Traditional Chinese Archery, Tai Chi, Edge Weapons, Martial Arts, Chinese Yoga and a few others. Me and my husband are lucky to be Master Kyle's students for Traditional Chinese Archery. The traditional style of Archery is different from the modern style. The traditional style focusses more on shooting with your mind than with your vision. You get to learn different martial ways of shooting an arrow like shooting while walking / stepping back / turning / laying down / sitting down etc. I feel traditional Archery stimulates the growth of both your mind and body. What I really like about this place is the way Master Kyle teaches. His style of teaching is never forceful, be it kids or adults. That way each class is a self improvement session. Overall, irrespective of the program, the Pa Kua style is non-competitive. The environment in the class has a different feel to it. I am writing this review, in my capacity as a current student of Archery at Burbank Pa Kua. Pardon me for the long read as my experience has been so good that it is hard to keep it short. We (me & my wife) joined Burbank Pa Kua to learn Archery about an year ago and from day 1 until now it has been an enriching experience. Why Archery?: My wife wanted to try out Archery and we were looking at different options and am glad we tried Archery at Burbank Pa Kua where they teach Traditional Chinese Archery (burbankpakua.com/program…). The archery taught here is different from the one in competitive sports where they use vision as the primary tool to take aim. They may also have other supports like scopes etc. to take the shot. Traditional Chinese Archery involves training your perception to take the shot. The different techniques taught as part of the program align with martial skills. In this discipline once well trained, you can also shoot with your eyes closed.Archery taught here is as much mental as it is physical. The arrows you shoot reflect your state of mind at that moment. The atmosphere of the class is non-competitive. You don't compete with your peers. Rather you compete with the best you from the previous shot. There have been days when my mind is cluttered with thoughts about work etc. and my shots would go haywire. It is one of the hardest tasks in life to keep your thoughts in check and to be in the moment. In this class we try to get closer to that state. Master Kyle: One of the best Gurus I have seen in my life. He is kind hearted, compassionate and always approachable. He style of teaching encourages you to observe and learn, helps you to progress in your discipline at your pace and not his. His 'way of life' is an example for us. Studio: It is a clean and well ventilated space. There are 3 changing rooms and a unisex bathroom. There is equipment supporting different programs. Parking is available in the front and on the backside of the studio. Parking details - burbankpakua.com/contactOther programs: There are different programs to pick from. Please see burbankpakua.com/programs for details. Evaluations: You do have an option to evaluate yourself in your discipline. Evaluations happen every 3 months I think. Again, it is super fun and not competitive. More...

I take archery with Master Kyle, and I love it! I was looking for a good archery school for a while-- never thought to check a martial arts school. It's better than I ever expected from a sport: the archery style at this school is Eastern (as opposed to Mediterranean), and I really prefer it-- Master Kyle teaches us to shoot without relying on just aiming. We learn how to shoot in motion, how to load arrows without looking-- it's actually really cool:) And there's a good mix of people-- I'm an actor, there are people who are doing it for meditative reasons, some are parents that come with kids (he has smaller bows and arrows for them). Master Kyle also offers other classes, including swords. And I know he always offers a free first class, so that's great too:) Love this place! More...

Words are not enough to describe this place and the experience you'll get. You just have to try to see it for your self. Took my 10-yrs. old son for 2 free classes. First day was Martial Arts and the second day for Archery. And that was it, he loves it. Master Kyle at Burbank Pa Kua Martial Arts and Health is one of a kind. His teaching styles and philosophy is just so different from what I have seen in my past experience and from today's most Martial Arts schools. I see his teachings helping anyone trough out their lifetime no matter what the age is. It's like Eastern and Western, traditional and modern, external and internal combined, all in one. Master Kyle is a father himself. He's great with kids and he's very patient. He teaches my son that the only person he needs to compete is himself. I think that is a very important lesson for anyone to learn. It has been 2 weeks and already I can see changes in my son. He is more focused, confident and respectful. Where else can a 10-years old learn Martial Arts, with so many options: Archery, Weapons, Tai Chi, Meditation, Kickboxing, Yoga, Acrobatics, Chi/Energy. And that's not all. Great after school program (with or without transportation). I can drop off my son after school. and pick him up by 6pm. He practice Martial Arts 3 times a week, one day Archery, and one day the kids decide what they want to learn, then does homework with help then gets free time. More...

Services

The most popular and commonly known part of Pa Kua is the martial art form called Pa Kua Chuan (Baguazhang). Many Martial Arts practitioners all over the world have been exposed to this form in one way or another. Pa Kua Chuan is easily recognized because of the circular form of walking and movement that dominates the form. Masters of various disciplines encourage their students to study Pa Kua Chuan to improve and increase the fluidity of movements in fighting techniques or in combat and sparring situations.

Traditional Chinese Archery is a discipline where we search for our mind. The bow and arrow have been considered by many great philosophers to be the ultimate weapon. The relationship between the bow and the energy of our mind is stronger than with any other weapon. When an arrow is shot, the archer can see any small variation in their mind manifested by the flight of the arrow and where it strikes.

Traditional archery is a martial skill as well and there are a large variety of techniques. Many of them are meditations and many of them are combat related. Learn to shoot while on the move, while running, or while in hiding or ambush. Shoot targets that move, and hold arrows in your hands while firing.

Tai Chi incorporates slow movements used as a form of relaxation and teaches control of every part of the body. The movements practiced are slow and steady and students focus on developing control and form as well as increasing muscle tone and improving flexibility. Fighting and self-defense techniques are included in the slow moving art. Students studying Tai Chi will improve their health and develop a sense of internal calm. Tai Chi teaches synchronization with the environment. Moving in concert with the dynamics of the cosmos. Following the movements of the universe. Looking for inner strength and outer softness. Using introspection. It’s the maximum expression of non-confrontation. It’s about opening the mind and breaking free of structure.

Acrobatics is the study of powerful positions, combining balance and strength, done by more than one person together that strengthens our understanding of society and relationships while helping each person overcome past shocks. Each student will improve strength and balance through different slow exercises using their own weight and the weight of a partner. These exercises will also clean and repair the body and mind by filling all the muscles and cleaning them with new blood and oxygen.

Chinese Yoga is an ancient art derived from Pa Kua knowledge. Through movements and meditation it teaches the student to harmonize body, mind, and spirit. The movements tone and strengthen the body, promoting lean and flexible muscle. Stretching exercises increase flexibility, protecting from injury and provide a greater range of motion, while the breathing exercises oxygenate the body and regulate both the heart rate and cardiovascular system. The student also learns techniques to relieve stress and achieve a sense of tranquility in the midst of the chaos of everyday life. Chinese Yoga is a way of studying ourselves through stretching, postures, breathing techniques, and cardiovascular exercises.
