My daughter has wanted to do surf lessons forever. We finally got a chance to sign her up on a recent visit to CA. San Diego Surf School was recommended by our hotel (Pacific Terrace) and they were close, so we booked 2 lessons. Let me tell you, they were fantastic! My daughter did 2 private lessons over 2 days. The instructors were great and she had a blast. The water was quite cold, so I’m glad they provided a wetsuit. On the second day, I also ordered the photos. My son and I took a semi private lesson with Chaz a few days ago. I have some experience from about 20 years ago but my son (13) had never surfed. Chaz gave us both clear instruction and advice based on our ability and experience and as a result we both progressed quickly and were able to catch a few unbroken waves by the end of our lesson. I had very limited surfing experience before signing up for an adult weekend retreat, however my instructor Billy, took me under his wing and gave me such great tips, advice and coaching that I was out in the line up within a couple of hours. All of the instructors and people who work at the San Diego Surf School are so welcoming and do their best to make sure that you have a wonderful experience! I'm the mom of a crazy water loving 5yr old who had lessons the week of April 9. Matt, Austin and Chaz were amazing and by the 3rd day my crazy water lovin' surfer was poppin' up and riding in the waves. Such a great experience for all of us. Chaz's enthusiasm on the last day just rounded out the whole week and brought so much joy to this momma's heart. Will definitely be back! I did the adult retreat and my 10 year old daughter the spring camp this last week, and it was by far one of the best breaks we’ve ever had! The instructors made us feel so safe and welcome and were just so fun. The only change I would make would be a structured break for the adults because three hours of surfing is insane. More...

Highly Recommend! I booked my first surf lesson for my 50th birthday. From my first phone call with tons of questions lol to my actual lesson, everyone I came in contact with was thorough, professional and kind. I called back to add the photo package. Totally worth it. Matt did the safety part of the lesson and Reese was my instructor in the water. I got up on my first wave!! I think he was just, if not more excited than me lol. He was patient and kind and gave me so much information. Highly recommend this school. There are a lot of schools to choose from in the area. It can be overwhelming on which one to choose. Save your time and energy and pick SDSS. They have a very streamlined process from start to finish. Things flow very well. It's very organized. No hassles. No up-sales. You get exactly what you pay for. You also get on the water quick and make the most of your lesson. They offer great prices that are well worth it. If you're just a tourist and only in San Diego a short while, this is a fantastic way to spend a day at the beach. The instructors are very inviting, experienced, and encouraging. If you're a local and interested in taking up surfing, you can't go wrong taking a lesson, especially here. It's really the only way to go. Ninety minutes is the perfect duration for a lesson, especially if it's your first one. It goes by fast and you have a ton of fun. At the same time, anything past that and you will be feeling it. Surfing, especially in the beginning, is a lot of exercise! The instructors are very patient if you're getting frustrated and also very jazzed when you do stand up and ride. A lot of Woohoos are heard in the water! Also highly recommend a lesson to learn the basics of surfing, if anything for the safety aspects and education. This has the potential to be a very dangerous sport. Getting proper instruction is really the only way to go. I do not recommend heading out to the waves on your own, especially with a hard board. You will get yourself and others hurt. Taking a lesson or multiple lessons, especially at a stellar school like this, will certainly help minimize risk and injury and increase your fun factor! My two boys (8 yrs and 10yrs) did the Summer Surf Camp for three days and loved every second of it! I thought that three hours may be a long time in the ocean- but my boys were wanting more. The second they got done with their last lesson they asked if we could come back next year. The instructors were fun, energetic, and gave both boys the tools to succeed. Terrible business practices , I always see them Putting people in the water after we have a rain, all the locals know it's very unsafe especially for tourists that have zero immunity to the water. Can't trust any business owners who allow that. While the other schools won't even rent equipment out let alone do lessons after a bad rain, they will do it all day. My two teenage children had 90 minute group lesson this past week. The air and water were quite chilly, but they both had a great time! This company is extremely well organized. Liked that the kids just had to go to the beach to get their wetsuits and surfboards. Their instructor was wonderful! Both kids each got up more than once and it was a rough day at the ocean.
