The Experiment was my 142nd escape room, and we had an absolute blast. Lots of clever puzzles (even some that I’ve not seen before, which is rare), and a really fun somewhat meta theming. Definitely check out this one if you get a chance.I’ve also done The Virus, but it was at their original Burbank location. It’s great, too.Beyond that, they have occasional offsite escape experiences where they set up at a bar and do a really fun Speakeasy and Westworld (um, I mean, “Frontierland”) themed interactive puzzle based escape theatre.Anyway, check them out. And if you get to meet Bob, say hi. He’s a hoot! More...

We had a great time. Found a Groupon for The Virus and although humanity could not rely on us tonight to save them we sure had a good time trying. The puzzles were great, our host/guard Josh was terrific. I would highly recommend this escape room. We carpooled because I read comments about the sketch area, but the security guard watching our car put our minds at ease so we could just have fun. We are new to escape rooms (our 2nd, our friends 1st) which was probably why we didn't make it through without being incinerated, but after we get some more under our belt we will be back to take on The Experiment. The pregame VR was fun too. My only advice is to bring a group that's manageable. More than 4 and you could be bumping into each other. We learned a lot of things for our next escape room. Go ahead and do it. You will not regret it. More...

With "THE EXPERIMENT", Matt the "ESCAPE MATTSTER" now has an official room count of: 72!- THE 10-SECOND QUICKIE VERSION -A meta, family-friendly, after-school special vibe escape room with minor plot twists. Actual theme to be discovered in game. Puzzles are widely varied, mostly gen 1 based, and enjoyable across the board. Clever use of space, lighting, and props will open even some enthusiasts' eyes. A tepidly difficult challenge that ends with a promised juice treat.- NOW... THE SIGNATURE DETAILED VERSION -You know how "Scream" defines the term "meta" for the horror genre? It discusses its common film tropes, pokes fun at its predictable conventions, and all the while being the very subject it is referencing--a scary movie. Well, "The Experiment" aims to fill the same shoes in the escape room universe.Professor Elias wants to know just why the "escape room" fad's got countless people spellbound. Enthusiasts of all ages, male and female, all are encouraged to participate in this psychological social study. He'll even entice you with juice! The dilemma with this sort of cryptic premise is that you rarely know what you're signing up for. What's the actual theme? Is it scary? The official site shows an anatomy drawing of a brain. So perhaps a biologist gone mad? None of the existing Yelp reviews (at the time) gave any definite clue, either--my brain therefore ran wild speculating.Came game day, I went in with a super-heightened expectation, and subsequently, the actual story fell a bit flat for me.To avoid potentially the same happening to you, I'll do everyone a solid; here's what you can expect: it is NOT science based, a departure from the company's other offering, "The Virus". It is NOT scary, though there are elements of suspense and mildly dark tones. Finally, there are minor plot twist(s), but it's more accurate to think of them as plausible story developments. (And don't forget the meta theme.)All in all, I felt like "The Experiment" invoked more of an after-school special vibe--after conflicts came resolutions, a happy ending for all. (Well, for us anyway, because we got out with ease.)Though I wasn't entirely swept away with the plot, it WAS still a concept you won't encounter often in this industry.More importantly, "The Experiment" still made quite the delightful Saturday morning outing for my team. With the help of a promo discount, we received way more value than our admission, especially for my friend, who praised "The Experiment" as one the more immersive games she's tried.I, too, agree that there were areas this room really shined through. For starters, the beginning parts of the game was constructed around the the architecture and the layout of the building, and thereby used up every nook and cranny of its structure. The owner basically transformed some dead space into part of the journey. Not bad.Next, the creator knows the overall game design still leans moderately more towards gen 1 inputs, ie traditional locks, so he made sure there is a wide array of puzzle formats to keep things from being stale. Calmly reflecting back now, this game really took out every weapon in the arsenal. There was just so much variety, something that I didn't fully appreciate under the time crunch. (And, oh, the outright deceptions!)(Of note, you won't be just dealing with locks. There was a handful of tech components, or gen 2 elements, involved, too.)Truly, we four walked away having experienced what we had never encountered in other venues. Notably, we also learned about the power of strategic lighting in escape room design. And who knew you-know-what is not just good for eating?Perhaps the only drawback, or advantage depending on perspective, was that the challenges were too easy. I hardly struggled over any given puzzle, and we escaped at a respectable speed without any hint. We even snagged ourselves the bonus prize by completing the bonus challenge. We walked away completely victorious, and yet secretly, I as a seasoned player yearned for more. On the flip side, this also effectively confirms that "The Experiment" really does welcome participants of all ages, from beginners to experts. And yes, as promised, juice was served!- FOOTNOTES -Reviews for other games from this venue, if available, can be found below in "Previous Review". TLDR: This escape room is awesome. It has a little bit of everything (all sorts of puzzles and excellent production value)! You even have the game master (GM) in the room with you so he can track who does what within the room.Credentials:I've done 35+ escape rooms across the country, mostly concentrated in Los Angeles, San Diego and SF. I've seen both ends of the spectrum for escape rooms. I've encountered lazy (or non-existent) GMs, props that broke in my hand, locks and doors that were never properly reset, etc and I've had some of the most amazing sets where you feel like you are actually walking on Mars or trapped in an insane asylum or speaking to the dead. Overall Score: 5/5Breakdown of Score:Staff: 6/5 (is this possible?)Our GM was Bob. I am pretty sure that Bob owns the branch (possible all of GTFO?). He was amazing. He was in the room with us and really sold the character he was supposed to play. If you could request Bob, I highly suggest doing so. Puzzles: 5/5Puzzles, on puzzles, within puzzles, on top of puzzles! This room hit all the sweet spots. There were audio clues, visual clues, colors, numbers, clues that lead to new clues and that to bigger clues, liquids and CANDY? Really the whole shabang. I won't give anything away, but this room was so good at making sure you stayed on track and never got bored. There were puzzles and clues coming at you from every direction.Production Value: 5/5Solid 5/5 for this room. Not only did you get the fun intro from your GM, but there were some excellent visual effects, clearly well maintained and extremely customized puzzle pieces and props -AND- a bunch of automation that triggered flawlessly from across the room. If you are a sucker for a good movie set, this is a room for you. PS - A component broke (specifically for me, not my team) at the beginning (during the explainer) but even with that ding, it was still an excellent room. Story: 4/5 Pretty standard for an escape room. Basically end of the world type of virus breaks out and you need to get out of the lab by doing X,Y,Z. I won't give out the details but I will say GTFO has really taken a basic story and made it their own. I don't think I will do another virus/epidemic escape room and NOT compare it to GTFO.Bonus things!? - Just to add, there is even a bonus puzzle on all of the ridiculous amount of puzzles in this room. If you get it, you get a prize! (PS - We got the prize!) More...

The Virus is definitely one my favorite rooms I've done in LA. The Virus goes to prove you don't need to be the latest room in existence to have an outstanding room. They have an amazing story paired with the experience, abundant and creative sciencey puzzles...There's just so much high quality puzzles packed into the Virus, I can't imagine how long it must take for GM's to set up a game each time. The GM's are in the room with you during the experience as well, and will nudge you in the right path if you're doing too many obviously wrong things. If you're not prone to motion sickness, there's also a really neat VR experience that serves as the introduction before starting the room.  There's so much you gotta do in the Virus and to save the world from the plague and since everything is non-linear it'd be best to bring a decently-sized group of friends to accomplish the virus. Street parking is free after 6pm. Otherwise the meters are on. Try to park somewhat close to lit buildings as the location is kinda sketch. More...

TLDR: The Virus is good, but their other room, The Experiment, may be one of the best in LA. I have done both of the Get the F Out rooms-- The Experiment really should have it's own Yelp page because it is FABULOUS. I'll just review them both here:The Virus is a fun room with a solid premise, VR experience at the beginning that is very immersive, and the game master is in the room with you the whole time which is unique and enjoyable. It was also decently difficult-- my group has done over 20 rooms between us and we got out with mere seconds to spare. This room is a solid pick but honestly pales in comparison to The Experiment, the other room from Get the F Out. The Experiment immediately immerses you in the experience. You are basically a lab rat in an experiment to better understand the group dynamics of escape rooms. It is very meta, and the plot thickens as you go through. Whatever you're expecting, you're in for a surprise. The puzzles are quality and there are LOTS of them. This room is genius in both idea and execution. Our experience was filled with adrenaline and Ah-ha moments. We left incredibly hyped about the room-- it was definitely the best one we've done in Los Angeles. Warning though: it was pretty hard, and a lot of it plays on the idea of escape rooms, so you may want to have done a couple before doing this one. It is WORTH IT though. I wish I could experience this room all over again. Quick shout out to our puzzle master, Josh. He saw us through both rooms and was totally awesome. Let me preface this review by admitting that I'm a newb when it comes to escape rooms -- this was my third, and my friend's first. (We were matched up with two strangers who had more experience.)But while I haven't done a *lot* of escape rooms, I can tell you pretty definitively that this was the *best* I've been to. There's a VR experience at the beginning that really helps kick off the story, and the puzzles themselves are challenging without being unfair. There was a real variety, too -- it felt like everybody in our group of four had multiple chances to "shine."Now... I'm not sure if I would have had the exact same experience if we'd filled in the whole room with 8 people. That seems like a *lot* for a fairly small room, and a couple of times I found myself wishing we had a little more area to lay out puzzles and whiteboards. I feel like 4 or 5 adults is probably the optimal number to tackle the room.My group was able to complete the room with an embarrassingly small amount of time to spare; we used at least two of the clues. We were not able to complete the bonus puzzle, but I liked that the option was available. The in-room GM (Josh) was great the entire time, and I liked that when the room was over, he went through the solutions that we overlooked. (In particular, there was one puzzle that we managed to "skip" and still stumble on the overall solution, so that was fun to know about.)I highly recommend the room, and some day I hope to go back to check out The Experiment. This was my 71st Escape Room and it's been on our list forever. Our group of enthusiasts finally made our way Downtown to play The Virus this past weekend - they aren't located in Burbank anymore, so don't make that mistake! We had so much fun! I wish we would have known that if you book out half the room they will block out the rest of the available spots- we were paired with 2 other people and it was their 1st ever Escape Room. It ended up being fine, but we prefer to play private rooms. The VR experience at the beginning was really cool. The Virus Room allows for 8 people to play and we had 7 total, and it was kind of tight but there was PLENTY for everyone to do. There were a ton of puzzles and they were all creative and made you think. The Game Master is in the room with you and really adds to the experience. You are allowed unlimited hints, but only 3 hints if you want to escape AND survive. We only used 1 hint and escaped with about 11 minutes left and then got to solve the bonus puzzle! Escape with me! Follow IG: EscapeMattster ;)ROOM 70THE VIRUS / Grade: A-I'd admit that trying out The Virus had been long delayed due to some of the less positive things I've read on Yelp, though now I would like to assert that even by 2019's standard, The Virus is still a decently solid escape room with its own unique charm. Synthesizing a cure to save the world from a viral pandemic is hardly a new crisis in the world of room escapes, but here's condensed version: scientist figured out the correct formula for a virus antidote, did not want it to end up in the wrong hands, so locked away the secret through a series of intricate puzzles. But doh, he dead, now you gotta synthesize it in his spirit before the virus eats you away too! This rather simple and familiar plot line may not have the strongest pull, so this company embellished the experience with a VR intro vid to fill you in the deets before you get busy cracking codes. (With a not-so-subtle cameo from the owner, Bob, too!) While technically not necessary, the VR was a genius way to augment an otherwise limited gaming space to a much grander dimension. It made me excited, and felt more immersed in my role of world-saving chemist. As mentioned, the entire game took place over a modestly sized laboratory, with no extra room to explore. (If you prefer room to room progression, explore their other game, The Experiment.) As a result, I have two immediate thoughts: [ONE] don't overstuff your friends into 1 game, I recommend 5 at most. (Pro tip: with 4/8 spaces booked, game can become private upon request.) And [TWO] in a rather tight space, can the creators really keep us that busy in 60 lengthy minutes?Turns out, oh yeah. Not a minute flew by without frenzy, either. And the particular sequence that kicked off the hour--I knew about it, and my friend fell for it. It's always comical to push your dear mates in the face of great danger, lol. I lived for that moment.Anyhoo, having a smaller space actually worked towards the venue's advantage because they were able to furnish & decorate every inch of the room into a plausible looking lab, without a single bare corner. Furthermore, labs are naturally full of cabinets, so the lock placements (for puzzle solutions) were arranged throughout in a mostly organic way that translated into a smooth, linear game play. The overall *format* was well structured, easy to pick up, & suitable for players of all levels. The *puzzles*, themselves, however, were not exactly easy (though I was both ill and tired from work today). In any case, they occasionally stumped this group of non-beginners. We were allowed 3 hints max, and we used all 3. (And that's not counting the gentle nudges we received for free along the way.) Puzzles came in a variety of formats, some relied on pure brain work, while others were super skill based. While I found the collection of challenges enjoyable, some were questionable in my opinion. For instance, a physical puzzle we tried early on proved to be frustrating, since the control was difficult to master. Two other puzzles would grant players with prior knowledge or training an advantage, which fortunately, gave my teammates a chance to shine, though there's definite evidence of tweaking on the designer's part that attempted to level the playing field for everyone. The good news is, since there's a long roster of puzzle, you'll probably find something more to your style, and all is forgiven. Although this game was developed some years back, the creativity stood the test of time. There's a heavy usage of padlock based reveal, so this is mostly a gen 1 room, but the creators were not afraid to make use of myriad interesting tools to guide you through the journey. And precisely because there was such a variety of ideas thrown into the mix, chances are, players of all levels would still see something new, or at least more than your handful of common escape room tropes.Certain puzzles may at times appear loosely tied to the main narrative, but they did all carry an undeniable flavor of "science" (hehe!), and that won my respect and appreciation. However, they did say the original scientist wanted to keep prying hands from stealing the formula, and these eccentric puzzles most surely *almost* did the trick! (Of note, my ability to quickly navigate around a periodic table got a slight ego stroke tonight! Ahhh, chemistry, at least you're useful in escape rooms.)As I was saying, these puzzles *almost* won, but they didn't, 'cause we got out. Whoo! The inclusion of a bonus puzzle was the cherry on top of a wonderful, contagion-infested night. We were so close in winning that bonus, too!I'd like to thank Julie the gm who helped end the next potential global extinction. She doubled as an in-game actress who gave both a committed performance as a lab tech and some just-right hints to help us advance. And Bob, thanks for treating your fellow enthusiasts with such kindness, and of course, RIP. More...

The Experiment is a room filled with twists, turns, and puzzles we had never seen before! Having done over 70 rooms it is very rare to see new puzzles or even certain items being used in different ways, but The Experiment showed us that there are still new puzzles to be seen and there is so much more than just the regular locks and keys. We started out thinking it would be like any other escape room that we had done but about 1/3 of the way through we released this room was going to be MUCH different. There were so many "aha!" moments in this room along with moments where we stood there in awe of what we were seeing. Gary was quick to response and solve the issue for me. He was so accommodating, it was so simple and love the communication. When we arrived Josh was attentive super fun and energetic. He had a great energy and it gave us such a good feeling about the escape room. He was helpful through out the entire time, we all had such a good time. Thank you to both Gary and Josh! You guys were amazing!!! More...

BLUF:  awarded among top 10 escape rooms in LA.  Definitely felt like it.  Staff were amazing and it was interesting to see the amount of technology being incorporated that sets itself apart from the others! CLEANLINESS: 5/5For its location and size it was surprisingly clean and well maintained.SERVICE: 5/5Staff were great.  Very knowledgeable and well trained.  Took ownership of the business and ensuring the customers were well trained and ready to play.COST: 5/5I dont remember the cost but it was comparable with other rooms.  Call ahead.  The owner was really cool about closing out the last two slots to ensure our party remained private. Best escape room I've been to!  The host (Bob) added great energy and made the experience even better.  A very clever set of puzzles, including some unique mechanisms and surprises.  Heartily recommended!

Great great escape room! I did the Virus with a group of 7 friends. After getting checked in, you'll start your experience with a VR intro. The setup is well done. In theory, you can do the escape room without it. But it adds to your total experience, and I enjoyed it. It definitely sets this room apart from others. Once the game begins, you'll find yourself in a lab with several locked cabinets to open. The puzzles overall have a sequence, which I appreciate (I don't like being overwhelmed with numerous clues that seem to not connect). The puzzles also had varied difficulties, from decoding passwords to physical tasks. The room for 7 people actually felt a little crowded. It's not a very large space and there's only 2-3 tasks at a time that are actively being worked on. I think this room could be successfully done with a range of 4-6 players, depending on escape room skill. One of the highlights was having the gamemaster in the room with us. He (forgot his name, sorry!) was helpful and stayed wonderfully in character throughout our game. I liked the comedic relief that he provided. For example, we were attempting to open locks that were marked as janitorial and he reminded us we are doctors not janitors. Those things were helpful so we didn't waste time on unnecessary and irrelevant items. Other groups may not like being so closely monitored, but it honestly made the game fun. My friends and I have left other escape rooms with disappointment and a lot of questions. I love that the Virus gave us a complete and memorable experience. Highly recommend! More...

Did the Experiment and Virus back-to-back and had a great time. The v/r intro was very cool and unique. Josh was an awesome game host.

Hands down one of the best escape rooms I've ever played.  I'm in the 100+ club and a former escape room employee, so I was absolutely thrilled to see the dedication to immersion and quality puzzles offered by this place.  My girlfriend and I lost the game by a few seconds, but it's still one of the best date nights we've ever had. Our group has done over 40 escape rooms and I thoroughly enjoyed both The Virus and The Experiment.Let's start with booking and parking.  Booking was easy and actually we had to rebook rooms.  I've dealt with other rooms and sometimes it is quite the hassle to get the appointments shifted.  So Bravo to ease of booking.  Parking was ample, and close.  The rooms start after 6 pm which leaves the street parking free.  5/5 for customer service.  The story for both rooms were creative and the activities of both rooms fit the theme.  Our host was very enthusiast and enhanced the experience.  5/5 for theme.Production value is great.  Without spoiling anything there are a few cool things that I haven't seen in other escape rooms and the variations of puzzles that we were familiar with were very high quality.  5/5If you are an escape enthusiast these rooms should definitely be on your to do list.  P.S. I love the lobby music. More...

Who is the best host? It's Bob! Both rooms are cool and fun to play. At times it was not easy, puzzles are interesting but overall we had a lot of fun and really enjoyed experience. Not sure if it would be the same without Bob :) p/s I think it's better to blindfold players for Virus instead of other room. More...
