The best Mexican food I have had in a long time!  Including compared to southern California.  This place is awesome and the price is not bad at all.  I wish I lived right next door.

This is a locals place that needs to go big time!  The food is very authentic and wonderfully done. I had a pork taco and fish tacos both superb. They had real Mexican Fanta and Coke also. The rice and retried beans were excellent the wife even ordered a second helping it was so good. The wait staff was friendly and the service moderately fast.  My only complaint is the location and that is no reason to complain because that is why the prices are low. I recommend this place. I love Love LOVE this place. Don't be fooled by the exterior or interior of this restaurant, as in, don't judge a book by its cover. The meals you order are made fresh and you can taste the difference.  It's not a 'Berto's' like back in Arizona or California, but it is still fantastic. They also make your corn tortillas from scratch, as well as the chips. The salsa and guacamole taste so fresh! Simply Delicious! What a terrific find in VA Beach.  This humble Taqueria provided excellent service and massive flavor!  The Al Pastor tacos were infused with Pineapple to deliver an outstanding flavor combination. Rice and beans tasted home cooked for sure.  I really enjoyed the friendly staff and their attentiveness.  This seemed to be a local favorite as the location was very busy.  Keep in mind this is a traditional taqueria so don't expect those silly Mexican imitation dishes found in mainstream restaurants.  Come with a hunger for truly authentic flavor and you will not be disappointed. Bruh! This is the best Mexican food I've hadIn my 31 years of living on earth at least in Virginia Beach. We waited a while but it was worth it because the food is delicious and authentic. For a strip mall Tex Mex joint, this cocina was on point! Authentic food is worth the wait, as service was very slow. Chips & chunky guac are probably the best I've ever had and the Ceviche tostadas were delicious.

Went to this place based on yelp reviews and I was not disappointed. The reviews are very accurate. The food was delicious. I had the chicken, steak, shrimp fajitas and everything was cooked and seasoned well. The refried beans were served with cojita cheese(I believe) so they were a little salty but mixed with the rice, it was fine. My husband had a veggie fajita and did not complain once. My preschoolers ate their chicken tacos (after the raw onions and cilantro were removed). We had ordered an extra side of rice that was forgotten but when we returned it was given to us without any issue. The restaurant is 5-7 minutes from the hotels but as other reviewers have said, it's in a less commercial area and there may be a sketchy looking character hanging around but no one bothered us or asked for anything. This is my family's favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach.   It's my favorite Mexican Resturant in the US.We found it last year on Yelp, went to the location and my wife wanted to leave.   The location isn't the best,   the look isn't the best,     the food IS THE BEST!  We ate there because of the reviews ... they were right!I travel around the US and eat a lot of places.   This is the BEST Mexican food I have found in the US.   It reminds me of places I have eaten in Mexico and the food is the same.If you eat the American style Mexican food, head here and learn what it's really like!  BTW - I'm not one of those everything is 5 star.   I have another review on Yelp for a Mexican restaurant in Virginia Beach that got the lowest rating I could give. So the area it's in isn't bad at all. There's a dollar general and an auto zone and some other miscellaneous shops. So we walk in and we aren't acknowledged right away. Others walk up to the counter to pick up food and we wait for about 10 minutes before we are greeted and told where to sit. I ordered sopes and my friend ordered tacos which is apart of the street cravings. Love love love the barbacoa and Asada. The masa harina that the sopes were made with was amazing. They were thin and not to thick like they used a tortilla press to flatten them out. Not too greasy. The horchata was also good. A lot of places, the horchata tastes like it came from the bag at Walmart. My daughter grabbed a banana soda out of the fridge by the front door. Food came up to about $38 bucks. After too many overpriced yet meh meals on the tourist strip, I was determined to find some decent food that wouldn't break the bank. Yelp reviews kept mentioning Taqueria Jessy's. The reviews warned it was in a strip mall with no ambiance, but that was fine with me.I loved this place so much, I want to go back to Virginia Beach just so I can have a big spicy bowl of caldo de camaron again (Mexican shrimp soup). My husband ordered the Arrachera (like a cross between a steak salad and an antipasto plate, but latin and awesome.) Both dishes were so much better than they sounded, and they sounded really good. Pulled up and almost didn't go in. The little strip that it is in had a bunch of sketch people walking around and didn't look very inviting. Do NOT let it fool you like it almost did us! We lived in San Diego for 5 years and it's been 3 years since we've moved and have not been able to anything close to the Mexican food out there...until now! You walk in and they have a to go counter or you can wait to be seated. The place is very small, nothing fancy, but very clean. The ladies were very friendly and the food was amazing! Husband got the Cali burrito w/ a coke and I got the two taco special (carne asada and barbacoa) w/ horchata and some chips and salsa to share. This place is as authentic as you can get on the east coast. I had tacos which were seasoned perfectly and the beans and rice were excellent also, not from a can and topped with a good sprinkle of cheese. I topped the tacos off with the red sauce which had plenty of flavor and a good amount of heat! My husband and I decided to try Jessy's out for lunch today. We walked in and were seated right away. I didn't realize it was a sit down restaurant. The waitress was very nice. I noticed on the wall that they had champurrado and I was so excited. I ordered a cup of champurrado, my husband ordered the choripollo, the carne asada fries and I got a chicken tamale. The choripollo was AMAZING! So delicious. We didn't love the carne asada fries but they weren't bad at all. We both agreed that we loved the addition of lettuce on top as we had never seen that done before. The tamale was great, too. It was spicy and not dry at all. I'm happy we tried this place. I had the pleasure of visiting Jessy's Taqueria for lunch with a friend. I read several of the glowing reviews first, but still felt myself cringe a little as I dodged potholes driving through the strip-mall parking lot. Their signage is bright and welcoming, definitely showing they are one the "new kid on the block." We walked in and were greeted and seated quickly. For a weekday midafternoon in October there was actually a good bit of people that made their way in and out of the restaurant. Since the atmosphere isn't what people rave about, it wasn't a surprise that most people coming and going were taking their orders to-go. Their menu was a little overwhelming. There is just so much variety! Truthfully, I had a hard time focusing. Finally I narrowed the massive menu down to two options and asked for my server's recommendation. Since I chose a mole dish or a cheese dish he didn't really have an opinion on which would be "better." I just flipped a mental coin and went with the mole enchiladas. While I was there I heard two different tables ask the server for a recommendation or to help them decide between 2-3 items. I am wondering if maybe he was new, because he didn't have an answer for any of us. If you are just as indecisive as I am you may want to bring a coin- or maybe he would play rock, paper, scissors with you to help you decide. Our food arrived quickly and my mole enchiladas were great! They were some of the best I have had in the area. The chicken was well seasoned and the sauce was abundant! They don't go crazy with the portions of the rice or bean sides, which I appreciated. My friend got the steak fajitas and we were both blown away by the portion size and amount of steak! This was definitely the star of our table. Fajitas always have such a fun, dramatic entrance too. When we were getting ready to leave I found out my friend had never tried flan before. They have coconut, chocolate, and traditional flan. For this visit we went for the traditional, but I am definitely going to grab the chocolate flan sometime. This was so creamy and delicious! Definitely worth saving room for! I noticed some of the reviews mentioned that they don't serve alcohol, it seems this has changed since they first opened. They had a blackboard full of sweet drink options. Probably not one of the top five places I would go if I was wanting a drink though. We've ordered out several times now, and every single time they deliver!! Super authentic and fresh!!! Just like I used to get back home in Oregon. .. true Mexican food. This place is always at the top of our list for eateries when we are at the oceanfront. We had 8 tacos in total and could barely move after. My favorite was definitely the soft beef which we were informed was tongue. My girlfriend hesitated, but I couldn't be more excited. The meat was so soft and succulent and flavorful.
