Found this place by chance because we didn't find any parking closer to the restaurant we planned to go to. It smelled delicious so we couldn't resist and had to walk in. It turned out to be a great decision because the food was amazing. There was a short wait because they had a large order previous to ours which was ready when the person picked it up. My fiancé ordered the brisket meal for $16 and I got the half rack of dry ribs for $18. Both plates came with two sides of our choice and good corn bread. I've had lots of BBQ in my life and I think this was outstanding for sure. Fall of the bone meat and perfectly cooked brisket, both quite delicious. The beans were a bit too sweet but still good. The mashed potatoes were perfect and the collard greens were tasty. The portion was large, so I had to take some of it home. I'm very happy we stumbled upon this place! The staff were nice as well. I shall return. More...

3.5 stars. A decent value by Ann Arbor standards. But, you might have to rely heavily on adding your own sauces to get good seasoning. This is my first visit. Tried the rice bowl with pork, vinegar slaw, and black eyed peas. Also got a side of potato salad. Only the peas tasted seasoned. The pork seemed cooked well, but didn't have much chat or fat to carry flavor without a sauce. Luckily they have a number of really tasty sauces at the table that won me over! Potato salad and slaw were barely seasoned, but a splash of sauce fixed that too. Just expected less work seasoning my own food, though ultimately it came out alright. I might or might not come back to try the rest of the menu. More...

This is a review for Satchel's downtown A2 location. I was pretty excited to hear Satchel's was coming to downtown as I'm a fan of their BBQ. The decor and vibe in this new location is modern, sheek, and you can definitely tell that you're at a good BBQ restaurant. I first started eating Satchel's a few years ago and am in love with their brisket and variety of sauces. Although it is not anywhere close to southern BBQ, this is one of the best you can get in southeastern Michigan. During this visit, I got pulled chicken sandwiches, collards, and cornbread. I usually douse my food in BBQ sauce and Satchel's has a variety of these sauces for you to enjoy. I really like the mustard based, sweet, hot sauce, and also the regular BBQ sauce. The staff at this new location are friendly and food service was very good. Overall, I recommend Satchel's if you're craving BBQ, just don't come with the expectations that you will get Southern BBQ. Satchel's!! on Washtenaw in Ann Arbor gets my five stars *****.  When I saw the photograph of the bottles of barbecue sauce and hot sauce, I bookmarked it. Parking is easy. The ramp to the door makes it welcome to all. The people behind the counter were very friendly. We shared a pulled pork platter. Our sides were vinegar cold slaw, potato salad and an extra side of baked beans. We got a bun rather than the corn bread. Every bite was succulent with bursts of amazing flavor. My favorite barbecue sauce was the house, the Carolina mustard sauce was also stellar. On our next visits I will try the other bottles of sauce. B asked if we could go back for dinner. There was a lot of carry out while we ate that made for good people watching and matching people with their cars. More...

Even as a person not given to liking red meat this place is on my favorites list. I like the pulled chicken and most of the sides. I like the mustard based BBQ sauce and was happy to see they have brought it back.I would give them a five star rating except for the last two visits the greens have been massively disappointing. Both times they were weirdly dried out and, as much as I love hot food, too over spiced. Not sure why they changed their original recipe but I wouldn't recommend them. More...

I should have been there long time ago. I don't know why or how I missed this place. They are situated just beside Whole-foods on Washtenaw behind Vorizon phone store. There are plenty of free parking . Inside of the restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. Nothing fancy but smart . It's a small joint but really great food. I went there for lunch and for $9 before tip, I got so much food. Their meat was very tender and juicy. I personally like it with some more seasoning and spice but that's just me . The food they serve is really good quality. I ordered brisket bowl which comes with rice and your choice of two sides. So I chose Mack and cheese and greens. The Mack and cheese wasn't the best but it was definitely good. They were not overwhelmed with cheese. The greens were the best. It was mixed with some meat too. I finished the greens which means it was good for sure. The food came quickly and it was warm. The amount of meat they served for only $9 is mind boggling. They have plenty of options for sauce to pour over and the best one is the house sauce which has little sweetness in it. Altogether my experience was excellent. The service was great. They were very attentive. Although it's a self help place where you order the food and pay on the counter then grab your silverware and napkins. They will call you for the food to collect. I want to go there again and try something new this time. They definitely deserve more visits again. More...

Hard to go wrong with Satchel's. I hadn't been here in almost a year, but decided to swing through for lunch. Something's different because the bbq was even better than I last remember it! The service was also outstanding. The staff answered my questions with a smile and were more than willing to offer up insight into their sides. I went with a mix of heir pulled pork and brisket. Both were phenomenally moist and tasty. What I love about good bbq is having great flavor without being overly Smokey. This bbq was the perfect balance. Their house made sauces were also excellent. Finally, the sides were awesome! I recommend the collard greens and the fried corn! :-) yum!! More...

I love all different types of BBQ. I get it from all the places in Ann Arbor. Satchels is ~very tasty~, the meat AND the sides. Sometimes I even do the lighter 3 sides and cornbread deal. The price is good for the amount of food you get. The only thing they need is a "open" sign that lights up so you can see it driving by, it's had to see the small sign in the door if cars are parked in front  :) More...

Had the combo plate of brisket and kielbasa, sides were mac and cheese and baked beans.  The brisket was amazing, and the kielbasa even more so!  Mac and cheese were 5 star, very creamy and delicious, while the baked beans were good, they were too far from the norm that I would order them again.  It was like they had a coffee ground rub added to them  My dining companion raved about the pork and kielbasa.  The collard greens were very good.  The cornbread served with the meal was surprisingly moist and very flavorful.  This is hard to accomplish as it dries out and becomes stale very quickly.  Great job on the bake. The cleanliness of the restaurant needs a LOT of work.  Diners - make a note to be sure not to use the restrooms.  They have not been cleaned since Moses walked the earth, and are beyond frat-house disgusting...if anyone has been to a Cleveland Browns game and opened the door to an over-flowing porty pot, this is similar.  I puked a little in my mouth.  I pity the workers for having to use them.  The dining is limited seating and self serve, but there was nothing to clean the tables with, nor was anyone doing it.  The salt and pepper are 4 oz portion control cups with plastic lids, so it is very likely someone is sticking their fingers in it for a pinch of seasoning.  The sauce bottles on the tables were thick with residue and sticky.Great food, filthy restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised with my trip to Satchel's. I dropped by on a whim in the middle of the afternoon because I had been craving good barbecue. I wasn't that hungry and was really just hoping to sample some of the meats. After explaining my desires to the folks behind the counter, they put together a quarter pound each of pork, chicken, brisket, and sausage for me to take away. I really appreciated their customer service and their friendliness and helpfulness is probably responsible for the fourth star here. The pork was the star of the show. They sample they gave me was moist and fatty, including a healthy cut of skin that carried extra fat and smiley flavor onto my palate. My biggest fear with pulled pork is having it be too dry, so I was in hog heaven with the succulent (some would say greasy) portions they provided. I tend to think that smoke and pork fat are enough seasoning, but if you're a sauce person, I found that a combination of the hot sauce and vinegar sauce was the best pairing with the pork. The vinegar sauce alone in too sweet and apple-like. The heat and garlic from the hot sauce really balance the dish out nicely. The sausage was probably my second favorite. It was courses ground, well seasoned, and had a dark bark that carried the smokiness forward. Again, pork fat doesn't need sauce, but this one went quite well with the mustard sauce (which was too assertively mustardy to pair with anything more delicate). The brisket was not what I expected, but it is good in its own way. I've traveled the country in search of the best barbecue, so my brisket tastes are particular to the Texas style (especially the Lockhart region). The brisket here was appropriately fatty, but the dark, heavy crust imbued a flavor of the wrong kind of wood (my recollection is that post oak is the most popular in Texas). It also was not sufficiently seasoned--a heavier dose of both salt and pepper would have been appreciated. Still, the dish is not without it's charm--smokey brisket is delicious even when less than perfect. The chicken was probably the most disappointing. I'm not sure how it is prepared, but there was little discernible smokiness and it was a bit drier than the other meats due to a dearth of fat. My quarter pound also included a sizable bone/joint that was inedible. I probably wouldn't order the chicken again (though it's not really my first choice outside of Alabama anyway). All told, Satchel's appears to be a solid option for someone who craves the occasional fatty, smoky, meaty treat. I'm likely to be back and I greatly appreciate the wonderful service I received on my first trip! More...

Brisket was very good, wish they asked if you prefer fat or lean, but give a good spread to cover. Also grabbed one of every sauce so I could sample and got an extra 3 containers of "house sauce" which is probably the best overall. The staff was knowledgeable and super attentive. The sides were all reasonable, I got mashed and gravy (my only regret is not getting extra gravy on the side (which was offered) and mac n cheese which while tasty left something lacking as it cooled down. All in all a great BBQ spot in a fairly unlikely location! Snacking on cold brisket and cornbread as I type this! Well worth the money and trip! More...
